Improved alkali metal ion capturing utilizing crown ether-based diblock copolymers in a sandwich-type complexation

Iklima Oral et al.

Summary: The complexation behavior of metals with free crown ethers and diblock copolymer-based crown ethers was studied, revealing that the latter exhibits at least 10,000 times stronger complexation. Based on this finding, a highly stable crown ether complex within the polymer is proposed for efficient extraction of metal ions at low concentrations, such as lithium in seawater.

Lithium selectivity of crown ethers: The effect of heteroatoms and cavity size

Iklima Oral et al.

Summary: This study investigates the selective complexation of lithium ions (Li+) over other alkaline and alkaline earth metal ions by crown ethers (CEs) using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. By optimizing the structures of CEs and evaluating the complex stabilities, qualitative trends are obtained that are consistent with experimental results. The study validates the accuracy of DFT and suggests its potential as a valuable tool for optimizing CE structures for selective complexation of Li+ or other metal ions. The results of this study are important for the further development of selective and sustainable lithium extraction from seawater.

Study on behavior of lithium ion in solvent extraction and isotope separation

Zezheng Zhang et al.

Summary: Current research reveals that lithium ion extraction by crown ether-ionic liquid system involves a cation exchange process dehydrating lithium ions to form a 1:1 composite. The extraction of lithium ions by diluent aligns with the cavity effect of anions, with competition from common metal cations also considered. Furthermore, the impact of different diluents on lithium isotope separation and the thermodynamics of lithium isotope exchange were investigated in the B15C5-[HMIm][NTf2]-anisole system.

A Highly Selective Polymer Material using Benzo-9-Crown-3 for the Extraction of Lithium in Presence of Other Interfering Alkali Metal Ions

Iklima Oral et al.

Summary: The development of a lithium-selective diblock copolymer system containing crown ethers has led to the establishment of a new material for efficient extraction of lithium ion traces in global water resources. The study demonstrates that benzo-9-crown is particularly appealing for its extraordinary complexation constants with lithium ions, avoiding interference from other alkali metal ions. This discovery holds promise for overcoming challenges in lithium recovery from water resources.

Synthesis of Poly(methacrylic acid)-block-Polystyrene Diblock Copolymers at High Solid Contents via RAFT Emulsion Polymerization

Iklima Oral et al.

Summary: The combination of PISA and RAFT emulsion polymerization is a powerful technique for controlled synthesis of diblock copolymers and polymeric nanoparticles. The modification of the Z-group of the RAFT agent led to well-controlled polymerization of PMAA-b-PS diblock copolymers at high solid contents in water. Different RAFT agents were investigated for the polymerization of PMAA and PS, showing that a dodecyl sidechain as a Z-group resulted in full conversion within 2 hours at a solid content of up to 50 wt%.

Characterization of 14-Crown-4 Ethers for the Extraction of Lithium from Natural Brines: Synthesis, Solubility Measurements in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide, and Thermodynamic Modeling

Arna Palsdottir et al.

Summary: This study focused on exploring the extraction of lithium from natural brines using supercritical fluid extraction. By synthesizing and testing two lithium extractants, the research aimed to provide insights for developing more efficient mining methods in the future. The study revealed high solubilities of the synthesized crown ethers in supercritical carbon dioxide and highlighted the importance of equation of state modeling in understanding the factors influencing solubility in this process.
