Reaction kinetics study of ethylene oligomerization into linear olefins over carbon-supported cobalt catalysts

Alvin Jonathan et al.

Summary: Ethylene oligomerization over carbon-supported cobalt catalysts at 200 degrees C selectively produces linear olefins and linear alpha olefins, with increasing the catalyst pretreatment temperature enhancing catalytic activity. However, cobalt metal supported on carbon deactivates during the reaction, likely due to higher rate of polyethylene formation, and the product distribution follows a Schulz-Flory distribution. The reaction is first order with respect to ethylene partial pressure, suggesting a mechanism involving the reaction of ethylene with adsorbed olefins on a highly covered surface.

Bis(imino)-6,7-dihydro-5H-quinoline-cobalt complexes as highly active catalysts for the formation of vinyl-terminated PE waxes; steps towards inhibiting deactivation pathways through targeted ligand design

Mingyang Han et al.

Summary: A series of five related bis(imino)-6,7-dihydro-5H-quinoline-cobalt complexes were synthesized and showed good catalytic activity for ethylene polymerization after pretreatment with modified metallocene alumoxanes. Among them, Co1/MAO exhibited the highest activity, producing a significant amount of polyethylene in a short period of time. These complexes demonstrated thermal stability and produced polyethylenes with narrow dispersities, particularly forming polyethylene waxes with high levels of vinyl unsaturation.

Ethylene oligomerization into linear olefins over cobalt oxide on carbon catalyst

Alvin Jonathan et al.

Summary: A stable cobalt oxide on carbon catalyst can selectively produce C-4-C-12 linear olefins, including linear alpha olefins, from ethylene. The product selectivity is influenced by the formation of polyethylene in the catalyst pores. The catalyst exhibits higher stability at higher temperatures and rapid deactivation at lower temperatures, likely due to reduction of Co3O4 to CoO.
