Isomer-Resolved Reactivity of Organic Peroxides in Monoterpene-Derived Secondary Organic Aerosol

Min Yao et al.

Summary: Organic peroxides play a crucial role in the formation, evolution, and health impacts of atmospheric aerosols. This study identified a range of peroxide monomers and dimers in secondary organic aerosols formed from the ozonolysis of alpha-pinene. The peroxides undergo rapid chemical transformation in the particle phase, with individual peroxides decomposing on different timescales. The reactivity of the peroxides is influenced by aerosol water content, with a greater impact at lower relative humidity. These findings are important for understanding the fate and impacts of organic peroxides on aerosol chemistry and health effects.

Fates of Organic Hydroperoxides in Atmospheric Condensed Phases

Shinichi Enami

Summary: Understanding the fate of organic hydroperoxides (ROOHs) in atmospheric condensed phases is crucial for assessing the oxidative and toxicological potentials of particulate matter. Recent studies have shown that liquid-phase alpha-hydroxyalkyl hydroperoxides can decompose to geminal diols and H2O2 depending sensitively on water content, pH, and temperature, with H+-catalyzed conversion playing a key role in the process.

Aqueous-phase fates of α-alkoxyalkyl-hydroperoxides derived from the reactions of Criegee intermediates with alcohols

Mingxi Hu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the aqueous-phase fates of alpha-AHs derived from the ozonolysis of alpha-terpineol in the presence of various alcohols. The decomposition of alpha-AHs was found to be catalyzed by H+ in acidic conditions, leading to the formation of multifunctional species such as hemiacetals and lactols. This H+-catalyzed decomposition process may be faster than other degradation processes in the atmosphere.
