Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Benzene in the Liquid Phase and Dissolved in Liquid Ammonia

H. Christian Schewe et al.

Summary: Valence band photoelectron spectroscopy measurements and electronic structure calculations were used to characterize the shifts in electron binding energies of benzene from gas to liquid phase, with the Born-Haber solvation model providing quantification. Despite the difference in polarity between liquid ammonia and benzene, the shifts were primarily determined by the electronic polarization response determined by the high frequency dielectric constant of the solvent.

Quantitative electronic structure and work-function changes of liquid water induced by solute

Bruno Credidio et al.

Summary: Recent advancement in liquid-jet photoelectron spectroscopy allows for accurate determination of electronic energetics in liquids. This study focuses on determining the lowest-ionization energy of liquid water and how it varies with solute addition and concentration. Results show different behavior of liquid water binding energy in NaI(aq) and TBAI((aq)) solutions, with significant energy shifts observed.

A setup for studies of photoelectron circular dichroism from chiral molecules in aqueous solution

Sebastian Malerz et al.

Summary: This article presents a unique experimental design for measuring photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) from chiral molecules in aqueous solution. The design allows for the detection of asymmetries in photoelectron emission when ionizing with circularly polarized light of different helicities. The modular and flexible setup also enables the detection of other photoelectron angular distributions. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of PECD detection and its potential for studying the effect of hydration.

Calculations of electron inelastic mean free paths. XIII. Data for 14 organic compounds and water over the 50 eV to 200 keV range with the relativistic full Penn algorithm

Hiroshi Shinotsuka et al.

Summary: The study calculated the inelastic mean free paths (IMFPs) of 14 organic compounds and liquid water at different electron energies and compared them with other experimental and calculated results. The results showed good agreement between the calculated IMFPs and the measured values within a certain energy range. However, there were significant differences between the experimental results for liquid water and the calculated results, calling for further investigation and resolution.

Exploration of Gas-Liquid Interfaces for Liquid Water and Methanol Using Extreme Ultraviolet Laser Photoemission Spectroscopy

Yo-ichi Yamamoto et al.

Summary: The study using EUV photoemission spectroscopy reveals the variation of vertical ionization energy and the energy and shape of individual photoelectron bands in aqueous and methanol solutions. The VIE of liquids changes with solute concentrations, indicating surface dipoles at the gas-liquid interface, while solvents alter the structure of first solvation shell of ionized solvent molecules. Solutes cause changes in high concentration photoelectron spectra, such as changes in band splitting, providing insights into interfacial and solution chemistry.

The Fermi level as an energy reference in liquid jet X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies of aqueous solutions

Lucia Perez Ramirez et al.

Summary: X-ray photoemission spectroscopy with liquid microjet setups is crucial for understanding key electrochemical and photocatalytic processes in aqueous solutions. Properly defining energy levels is necessary for determining vertical ionization energies and binding energies, with the vacuum level and Fermi level uniquely determined through the rising edge of secondary electrons and introduction of redox couples.

Low-energy constraints on photoelectron spectra measured from liquid water and aqueous solutions

Sebastian Malerz et al.

Summary: The study reveals that quasi-elastic scattering distorts the photoelectron peak shapes significantly, and accurate determination of electron binding energy requires large electron energies. Additionally, the onset of indirect autoionization phenomena and the increasing importance of vibrational inelastic electron scattering processes at lower photon and electron kinetic energies are highlighted.
