Topological features without a lattice in Rashba spin-orbit coupled atoms

A. Valdes-Curiel et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers explore the topology in spin-orbit coupled 87Rb atoms using time domain spectroscopy and quantum state tomography. They measure the full quantum state to extract the Berry phase of the system and demonstrate signatures of a half-integer Chern index.

Rashba valleys and quantum Hall states in few-layer black arsenic

Feng Sheng et al.

Summary: In this study, synergistic effects between spin-orbit coupling and the Stark effect in centrosymmetric few-layer black arsenic are reported, leading to particle-hole asymmetric Rashba valley formation and exotic quantum Hall states controlled by electrostatic gating. These novel phenomena are rooted in the unique lattice structure and orbital symmetries of black arsenic, enabling gate-tunable manipulation of Rashba valleys for two-dimensional electronic systems with unconventional quantum Hall states.

Quasiparticle interference and quantum confinement in a correlated Rashba spin-split 2D electron liquid

Chi Ming Yim et al.

Summary: Exploiting inversion symmetry breaking in systems with strong spin-orbit coupling allows for spin control through electric fields, requiring specific conditions for a two-dimensional electron gas. Recent studies have shown a large Rashba spin splitting on the transition metal oxide terminations, indicating a different orbital effect that raises questions about quasiparticle scattering. The spin-orbital selection rules relevant for conventional Rashba systems are demonstrated to be true spin selection rules in this correlated electron liquid, with the spin coherence length determined through quasiparticle interference imaging.

Effect of Rashba spin-orbit and Rabi couplings on the excitation spectrum of binary Bose-Einstein condensates

Rajamanickam Ravisankar et al.

Summary: This study presents the collective excitation spectrum analysis of binary Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit and Rabi couplings, revealing the crucial role of SO and Rabi coupling strengths in determining the dynamical stability of coupled BECs. The results show that an increase in SO coupling leads to instability, while an increase in Rabi coupling stabilizes the system and generates different excitation modes.

Orbital Rashba effect in a surface-oxidized Cu film

Dongwook Go et al.

Summary: Experimental observations have shown a significant enhancement of the orbital Rashba effect in a system of oxygen monolayer on top of a Cu film, leading to a strong chiral orbital texture in momentum space; Resonant hybridization between O p states and Cu d states is responsible for the emergence of the orbital Rashba effect at the interface; The application of an external electric field generates colossal orbital Hall currents, indicating a potentially significant role of the orbital torque mechanism in surface oxidized Cu/ferromagnet structures.

Emergence of strong tunable linear Rashba spin-orbit coupling in two-dimensional hole gases in semiconductor quantum wells

Jia-Xin Xiong et al.

Summary: Contrary to conventional wisdom, a strong and tunable k-linear Rashba SOC has been discovered in Ge/Si semiconductor quantum wells, originating from a combination of heavy-hole-light-hole mixing and direct dipolar coupling to the external electric field. Ge/Si QWs oriented in the [110] direction exhibit a much stronger linear Rashba SOC compared to their [001] counterparts, making them an excellent platform for large-scale quantum computation.

Cubic spin-orbit coupling and anomalous Josephson effect in planar junctions

Mohammad Alidoust et al.

Summary: Recent research has uncovered a class of materials characterized by dominant SOC cubic in the wave vector, with unexplored superconducting properties. Experimental studies of Josephson junctions in these materials have revealed a strongly anharmonic current-phase relation and complex spin structure. The unique f-wave spin-triplet superconducting correlations in Josephson junctions with cSOC are important for superconducting spintronics and supporting Majorana bound states.

Spectral characterization of the Rashba spin-split band in a lead halide perovskite single crystal by photocurrent heterodyne interference spectroscopy

Yoshihiro Ogawa et al.

Summary: Utilizing heterodyne interference spectroscopy, we investigated the temperature dependence of the complex dielectric susceptibility spectrum of a perovskite CH3NH3PbBr3 single crystal. We observed two peaks below the exciton transition at the R point in the imaginary part of the spectrum, with different temperature dependences compared to the direct-transition exciton energy. The trends in both splitting width and peak intensities can be explained by the presence of a Rashba spin-split band.
