Screening of bacterial and fungal strains for cellulase and xylanase production using distillers' dried grains with solubles (DDGS) as the main feedstock

Attia Iram et al.

Summary: Bioenergy, particularly bioethanol produced from food crops, presents a promising solution for environmental concerns regarding non-renewable energy sources. By utilizing hydrolyzed DDGS as a feedstock, fungal strains like Aspergillus niger exhibited higher production of cellulase and xylanase compared to bacterial strains like Bacillus subtilis. Further optimization of growth parameters and medium components using bench-top bioreactors is needed for enhanced cellulase and xylanase production.

Efficient Strategy to Alleviate the Inhibitory Effect of Lignin-Derived Compounds for Enhanced Butanol Production

Shrikant A. Survase et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of lignosulfonate on ABE production and proposed a technique to overcome lignosulfonate inhibitory action. Addition of soy meal was shown to enhance Clostridium acetobutylicum survival and increase butanol concentration during fermentation. The transcriptional analysis revealed upregulation of key genes in clostridial metabolic pathways in the presence of soy meal.

Fungal glycosyl hydrolases for sustainable plant biomass valorization: Talaromyces amestolkiae as a model fungus

Alicia Prieto et al.

Summary: Fungi play a crucial role in nature by secreting enzymes to degrade plant biomass, mobilizing organic carbon fixed by photosynthesis. Biotechnology can utilize lignocellulosic biomass and fungal enzymes to sustainably produce consumer goods. This study focuses on enzymes secreted by the filamentous ascomycete Talaromyces amestolkiae and their applications in biotechnology.
