On-demand degradable embolic microspheres for immediate restoration of blood flow during image-guided embolization procedures

Hyunjun Choi et al.

Summary: The study introduces degradable and MRI-visible microspheres for embolotherapy, demonstrating their responsive on-demand degradation properties in vitro and in vivo. Successful embolization of hepatic arteries with these microspheres under DSA guidance was confirmed with images and contrast-enhanced MRI. The T2 MRI visibility of these microspheres allowed for monitoring their distribution during intra-arterial infusion.

Fabrication of Fe3O4@PVA microspheres by one-step electrospray for magnetic resonance imaging during transcatheter arterial embolization

Jiaojiao Li et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel method for fabricating PVA microspheres encapsulated with in situ synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles, which were used as contrast agents for MRI and cross-linkers for PVA matrixes. In vivo evaluations showed that Fe3O4@PVA microspheres had good embolic effect and enhanced MRI capability, with favorable biocompatibility. The DOX-loaded Fe3O4@PVA microspheres demonstrated a sustained drug release profile, indicating their potential for MRI, embolotherapy, and chemotherapy.
