The Role of Relative Capacitances in Impedance Sensing with Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Josefin Nissa et al.

Summary: The organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) is of interest for biosensor technology due to its ability to transduce ionic to electronic signals. Research shows that in impedance sensing, gate-limited OECTs produce the largest sensor response. By using an equivalent circuit model to study frequency response, the optimal transistor configuration for generating the largest sensor signal depends on the capacitance to be sensed and membrane permeability.

Summary: This primer discusses the various architectures and mechanisms of electrolyte-gated transistors (EGTs), as well as their applications in bioelectronics. It covers the materials and fabrication methods used in EGT structures, as well as the integration of functional bio-layers and biosystems. The primer also explores the advantages, limitations, possible optimizations, and future directions of EGTs in the field of bioelectronics.
