Activation of apoptosis by rationally constructing NIR amphiphilic AIEgens: surmounting the shackle of mitochondrial membrane potential for amplified tumor ablation

Haidong Li et al.

Summary: This study presents a molecular design strategy to synthesize a novel near-infrared amphiphilic AIE photosensitizer TPA-S-TPP with excellent mitochondrial targeting and apoptosis-inducing effects on tumor cells, while exhibiting low toxicity to normal cells. The synergistic effects of lipophilicity, electrostatic interaction, and structure-anchoring enable TPA-S-TPP to be an efficient theranostic agent for cancer treatment. This research opens up a new avenue for designing more ideal amphiphilic AIE photosensitizers with near-infrared fluorescence.

Rapid membrane-specific AIEgen featuring with wash-free imaging and sensitive light-excited killing of cells, bacteria, and fungi

Kexin Zhang et al.

Summary: Membrane-specific fluorescence imaging is important for understanding cell or microbe roles in physiological and pathological processes. AIEgens, like the designed probe C6-BD, offer advantages of high sensitivity, excellent photostability, and biocompatibility for visualizing cell membranes with selectivity, stability, and wash-free operation. C6-BD also has universal applications for imaging bacteria and fungi, as well as efficient ROS generation for killing Gram-positive bacteria and fungi after white light irradiation.
