Bayesian approach to inverse problems: an application to NNPDF closure testing

Luigi Del Debbio et al.

Summary: In this study, the Bayesian approach to solution of inverse problems is discussed and applied to analyze the closure tests performed by the NNPDF collaboration. Insights gained from analytical results are used to guide the analysis of more complex non-linear problems. The study shows that the posterior probability density of the parametrized parton distributions (PDFs) can be fully determined by the NNPDF fitting procedure in the case of Gaussian distributions. New estimators are introduced to assess the statistical reliability of the closure test results, and these estimators are analyzed using the Bayesian formalism in a linear model to clarify their meaning. Results from closure tests performed with the NNPDF methodologies are presented to validate the NNPDF4.0 methodology and provide a quantitative comparison with the NNPDF3.1 methodology.

An exploratory study of the impact of CMS double-differential top distributions on the gluon parton distribution function

Michal Czakon et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of CMS double-differential (tt) over bar distribution data at 8 TeV on the gluon distribution, finding that there is no significant impact when the data is added to the global PDF fit with inclusive jet data from Tevatron and LHC. However, when the jet data is removed from the fit, an impact is observed. Scaling the CMS data with a larger weight could lead to an equal impact on the gluon distribution as the inclusive jet data, suggesting potential for more significant impact of the (tt) over bar data at higher integrated luminosity at 13 TeV.

Deuteron uncertainties in the determination of proton PDFs

Richard D. Ball et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the uncertainties due to nuclear effects on proton parton distribution functions in global fits, utilizing an iterative procedure to determine both proton and deuteron PDFs simultaneously. It was found that the impact of nuclear uncertainty on proton PDFs is minimal, and overall uncertainties are insignificant once corrections for nuclear effects are made.

Summary: The software framework for the NNPDF4.0 global determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs) is released under an open source license, providing extensive documentation and examples for users. The framework includes tools for PDF fitting, handling experimental data, comparing it to theoretical predictions, and conducting versatile analysis. The public release of the NNPDF fitting framework ensures reproducibility of the NNPDF4.0 determination and enables various phenomenological applications and PDF fits based on user-defined data and theory assumptions.

Parton distributions and lattice-QCD calculations: Toward 3D structure

Martha Constantinou et al.

Summary: The theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) describes the strong force binding hadrons together. Parton distribution functions (PDFs) have been successful in describing collinear partons within hadrons, but new experiments are exploring the transverse structure using generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMD PDFs). Different methods, including perturbative QCD factorization theorems and lattice-QCD calculations, are used to determine PDFs and generalize the understanding of hadron structure.

Parton distributions from LHC, HERA, Tevatron and fixed target data: MSHT20 PDFs

S. Bailey et al.

Summary: The new MSHT20 set of parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton, determined from global analyses of hard scattering data, includes updates such as improved parameterizations, new precise data, and NNLO QCD corrections. The NNLO fit is strongly favored over the NLO due to wider range and increased precision of data included in the fit, resulting in reduced uncertainties in predictions for processes such as Higgs, top quark pair, and W, Z production at post LHC Run-II energies.

Compressing PDF sets using generative adversarial networks

Stefano Carrazza et al.

Summary: The algorithm proposed involves using synthetic replicas generated by a generative adversarial network (GAN) for compressing parton densities, leading to a compressed set with fewer replicas and better representation of the original probability distribution. Additionally, the potential of GAN as an alternative mechanism to avoid fitting a large number of replicas is discussed.

NNLO QCD predictions for W plus c-jet production at the LHC

Michal Czakon et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the production of a W boson in association with a c-jet at the LHC, calculating the complete set of NNLO QCD corrections for the dominant CKM-diagonal contribution to this process for the first time. Predictions are made for fiducial cross sections and differential distributions for both signatures, which are compared with ATLAS measurements at 7 TeV. The results are important for precise description of heavy flavor production at hadron colliders and determination of the strange-quark content of the proton from LHC data in NNLO QCD.

New CTEQ global analysis of quantum chromodynamics with high-precision data from the LHC

Tie-Jiun Hou et al.

Summary: The new parton distribution functions (PDFs) from the CTEQ-TEA collaboration are determined using a wide variety of high-precision Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data, in addition to other datasets. These PDFs are analyzed at next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order, with error sets determined using the Hessian method. The data sensitivity and preference towards quantities such as α(s)(m(Z)), and the gluon and strange quark distributions are quantified using fast PDF survey techniques.
