Comparing the performance of drought indicators in Australia from 1900 to 2018

Sara S. Askarimarnani et al.

Summary: Drought is a complex natural hazard caused by a combination of atmospheric and hydrological processes, with various indicators available for different types of drought monitoring. A study comparing 11 drought indicators in different regions of Australia revealed significant differences in how they represent drought conditions, highlighting that rainfall shortage is just one aspect of drought.

Drought Variability over the Conterminous United States for the Past Century

Lu Su et al.

Summary: The study examined the drought variability over the conterminous United States using the Noah-MP land surface model and found that the representation of groundwater and dynamic vegetation had different effects on drought reconstruction. Different model configurations showed a small decreasing trend in dry area coverage over CONUS, with representation of groundwater tending to increase drought duration and dynamic vegetation tending to shorten major droughts duration. Regional variations were observed, with the U.S. Southwest having the longest major drought durations and other subregions showing a decrease in dry area coverage.

National Tibetan Plateau Data Center Promoting Earth System Science on the Third Pole

Xiaoduo Pan et al.

Summary: The Tibetan Plateau, known as the world's Third Pole, is undergoing rapid, intense climate change similar to or even more severe than that seen in the Arctic and Antarctic. Data sharing is crucial for understanding these unprecedented changes and their impacts on the environment and humans. The National Tibetan Plateau Data Center (TPDC) is a cloud-based platform with a wide range of scientific data sets, providing tools for online data acquisition, quality control, analysis, and visualization to enhance efficiency in data sharing. The TPDC has evolved from a centralized to a decentralized system, effectively linking Third Pole-related data from various domestic and international sources.
