Light-Promoted C-N Coupling of Aryl Halides with Nitroarenes

Gang Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a photochemical C-N coupling of aryl halides with nitroarenes for the first time, catalyzed by a Ni-II complex in the absence of any external photosensitizer. The method provides a step-economic extension to the widely used Buchwald-Hartwig C-N coupling reaction and tolerates coupling partners with steric-congestion and functional groups sensitive to bases and nucleophiles. Mechanistic studies suggest the reaction proceeds via the addition of an aryl radical, generated from a Ni-I/Ni-III cycle, to a nitrosoarene intermediate.

Summary: Silver nanoparticles decorated NaNbO3 nanorods based nanocomposite were successfully synthesized using a simple chemical solution method to enhance photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical water splitting properties. The synergistic plasmonic and piezo-phototronic effects resulted in significant enhancement in the photodecomposition of organic dye and photocurrent density in comparison to bare NaNbO3. This approach demonstrates a novel strategy for improving the performance of silver decorated semiconductor/piezoelectric material for efficient photocatalytic dye degradation and PEC water splitting.

Mediator-Enabled Electrocatalysis with Ligandless Copper for Anaerobic Chan-Lam Coupling Reactions

Benjamin R. Walker et al.

Summary: This study reports the use of substoichiometric quantities of redox mediators to address limitations to Cu-catalyzed electrosynthesis. By applying this strategy to Chan-Lam coupling of aryl-, heteroaryl-, and alkylamines with arylboronic acids without the need for chemical oxidants, couplings under these electrochemical conditions occur with higher yields and shorter reaction times compared to conventional reactions. The redox mediators serve multiple roles in rapidly oxidizing low-valent Cu intermediates, regenerating the catalyst, revealing the active Pt surface for proton reduction, and providing anodic overcharge protection to prevent substrate oxidation.

Reductive C-N Coupling of Nitroarenes: Heterogenization of MoO3 Catalyst by Confinement in Silica

Fu Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, nanoporous MoO3 confined in silica was used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for C-N cross-coupling of nitroaromatics with aryl or alkyl boronic acids, producing N-arylamines. The silica not only heterogenized the Mo species in the confined mesoporous microenvironment, but also significantly reduced the reaction induction period and regulated the chemical efficiency of the targeted product. The well-shaped MoO3@m-SiO2 catalyst demonstrated improved catalytic performance compared to homogeneous Mo catalysts, commercial Pd/C, or MoO3 nanoparticles, offering a new avenue for the heterogeneous catalytic synthesis of valuable bioactive molecules.

Plasmon-induced catalytic CO2 hydrogenation by a nano-sheet Pt/HxMoO3-y hybrid with abundant surface oxygen vacancies

Hao Ge et al.

Summary: Utilizing degeneratively-doped metal oxide and precious metal hybrids with plasmonic absorption in the visible-light region allows for efficient utilization of solar light in photothermal catalysis. Among various morphologies of Pt/MoO3 hybrids, the nanosheet-structured Pt/HxMoO3-y(Sheet) catalyst demonstrated the best performance in the photothermal synergistic catalysis of the RWGS reaction, attributed to its high specific surface area, proportion of exposed surface atoms, and optical transparency. Additionally, the Pt/HxMoO3-y(Sheet) hybrid contained the largest amount of surface O vacancies and exhibited the strongest plasmonic absorption, leading to its highest catalytic activity among the investigated hybrid catalysts.
