Experimental investigation of superlong two-phase closed thermosyphons for geothermal utilization

Tao Lin et al.

Summary: The heat transfer limit of the superlong TPCT is around 20 kW, with a temperature gradient along the thermosyphon lower than 1.5 degrees C/100 m. Increasing heating power increases the temperature and heat transfer rate, but does not affect them after entering the thermally blocked state.

Characterization and performance of a 3D-printed two-phase closed thermosyphon

Behnam Mohseni-Gharyehsafa et al.

Summary: We conducted an experimental study on the performance of a 3D-printed closed two-phase thermosyphon. The thermosyphon was additively manufactured with stainless steel using laser powder-bed fusion technique. The device features a single unit design with an extruded helical heat exchanger and integrated pillar arrays. We investigated the effects of acetone filling ratio and heat flux on the thermal performance of the thermosyphon, and found the optimal filling ratio and minimum thermal resistance.

Operational regimes in a confined pulsatory two-phase thermosyphon

Utsav Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: The major loopholes in the existing criteria for classifying flow characteristics in confined two-phase closed thermosyphons (TPCTs) have been recognized, and it is important to further understand the phenomenology of flow regimes and the influence of confinement on heat transfer characteristics. Therefore, a visual and detailed study of the thermohydrodynamics of TPCTs is essential for developing solutions to enhance their operational limits.

Effect of working fluid inventory and heat input on transient and steady state behavior of a thermosyphon

S. M. Sadrameli et al.

Summary: The experimental results reveal that during the startup phase of the thermosyphon, the evaporator temperature fluctuates when the working fluid volume is 0.14, 0.18, and 0.24, indicating intermittent boiling phenomenon. However, when the working fluid volume exceeds 0.24, the performance of the thermosyphon shows vibration, suggesting high fluidity and inadequate functionality. The optimal working fluid volume is 0.18, where the efficiency of the thermosyphon ranges from 73% to 78% at different levels of heat input.

Yinchuang Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the thermal performance of a novel wettability patterned evaporator in an ultrathin vapor chamber. The results showed that the wettability pattern greatly reduced horizontal thermal resistance and improved temperature uniformity across the condenser side at a certain heat flux, leading to a substantial increase in effective thermal conductivity.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the thermal performance of vacuumed copper pipe with different volume values and inclination angles under variable vacuum pressures. The experimental boiling heat transfer coefficients showed good agreement with existing correlations in the literature, and the best thermal resistance was achieved in the vacuumed copper pipe filled with 10 ml of water at a 90-degree inclination angle.

Dropwise condensation of acetone and ethanol for a high-performance lubricant-impregnated thermosyphon

Donghyun Seo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates dropwise condensation of acetone and ethanol within a TPCT using lubricant-impregnated surfaces, leading to improved heat transfer efficiency. The use of LIS surfaces increased the condenser HTC by 220% and decreased the overall thermal resistance of the TPCT by 44% compared to filmwise condensation. The viscosity of working fluid plays a crucial role in dropwise condensation stability and heat transfer enhancement.

Summary: The study compared the thermal and flow behaviors of different working fluids in a two-phase closed thermosyphon and found the distinct characteristics of water, acetone, and HFE7100. Local dry-out was observed for water at high heat flux, entrainment occurred for HFE7100, and the condensation heat transfer coefficient was higher for water compared to acetone and HFE7100.

Heat transfer and hysteresis characteristics in an elbow thermosyphon

M. G. Hammouda et al.

Summary: Measurements were conducted on a grooved copper-water elbow thermosyphon with 30% fluid loading, showing significant hysteresis in the evaporator performance at moderate heat transfer rates. A transition to a more dynamic flow regime in the evaporator occurred at around 6 W/cm2, which was consistent for both increasing and decreasing heat transfer rates. Improved performance in the upper or film region was observed after dynamic regimes, indicating wetting of the internal structure during this process, with reduced effect at higher operating temperatures.
