Poly(l-lactide)s with tetraphenylethylene: role of polymer chain packing in aggregation-induced emission behavior of tetraphenylethylene

G. Virat et al.

Summary: The development of biocompatible and biodegradable fluorescent polymers and understanding their fluorescent characteristics are highly desirable. In this study, different shapes of poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) and tetraphenylethylenes (TPE) were synthesized, and their fluorescence behavior in the sol and gel states was investigated. Star-shaped PLLA exhibited stronger fluorescence compared to one-armed and two-armed PLLA in the gel state. The emission behavior of PLLA was found to be sensitive to temperature-induced structural changes, including crystal-to-crystal transitions and enhanced amorphous chain mobility, which affected the fluorescence characteristics.

Solid-state intramolecular motions in continuous fibers driven by ambient humidity for fluorescent sensors

Yunmeng Jiang et al.

Summary: This study utilizes solid-state intramolecular motion of AIE molecular rotors and fibers to develop highly sensitive optical fiber sensors responsive to ambient humidity with observable chromatic fluorescence change. The sensors provide a linear response to humidity by inducing intramolecular motions of AIE molecules through swelling of polymer fibers in moisture environments. This approach offers a process-friendly architecture and physically tunable medium for manipulating fluorescence response characteristics, allowing for hierarchical sensor structures adaptable for spatial-temporal humidity mapping and device integration for light-emitting sensors and touchless positioning interfaces.

Well-defined polyacrylamides with AIE properties via rapid Cu-mediated living radical polymerization in aqueous solution: thermoresponsive nanoparticles for bioimaging

Congkai Ma et al.

Summary: In this work, a robust synthetic route was optimized for the preparation of a diverse range of water-soluble AIE polymers using aqueous Cu-mediated living radical polymerization. The polymers exhibited excellent control and high-end group fidelity, allowing for various copolymerization reactions and applications in bioimaging. The fluorescence intensity of the polymers was shown to depend on the polymer concentration, architecture of the side chains, and temperature, with potential for lysosome-specific probes in bioimaging due to their good biocompatibility, photostability, and high specificity.

Direct visualization of interfacial debonding in FRP structure using an AIE molecule

Bi-Wei Meng et al.

Summary: A direct visualization method using TPE-4N molecule was developed to detect interfacial debonding in FRPs, quantifying the damage information in materials through grayscale values. The debonding strain obtained by this method was significantly lower than traditional measurement, indicating the effectiveness of the fluorescence technique for real-time observation of damage process in FRP structures.

An AIE-based enzyme-activatable fluorescence indicator for Western blot assay: Quantitative expression of proteins with reproducible stable signal and wide linear range

Tijian Zhou et al.

Summary: Western blot is a commonly used experimental method to analyze protein expression, but the currently used chemiluminescent indicator has limitations in linear range and reproducibility, while fluorescent indicators suffer from poor detection limit. A newly developed enzyme-activatable fluorescence indicator with hydrophilic alkaline phosphatase (ALP) triggered phosphoric acid moiety shows stable signal and wide linear range for protein quantification, providing a practical alternative for fluorescence Western blot assay.
