Insights into cell wall disintegration of Chlorella vulgaris

Sophie Weber et al.

Summary: With their ability to fix CO2 using sunlight, algae and microalgae are being studied for the production of proteins and valuable compounds. However, the successful utilization of algal biomass relies on effectively disrupting the recalcitrant cell wall. This study evaluated different methods to break up the cell wall and measured success by protein and carbohydrate release. The analysis also identified factors contributing to the robustness of the cell wall.

Biochemical and Morphological Characterization of Heterotrophic Crypthecodinium cohnii and Chlorella vulgaris Cell Walls

Greta Canelli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the composition and morphology of cell wall polysaccharides in heterotrophic Crypthecodinium cohnii and Chlorella vulgaris during growth. Glucose was found to be the major component of CWPSs and exopolysaccharides in C. cohnii, while C. vulgaris exhibited changes in cell wall thickness at different growth stages. Understanding microalgae cell wall structure can aid in developing more efficient biorefinery approaches.

The cell wall of green microalgae and its role in heavy metal removal

Olivia Spain et al.

Summary: Heavy metals in industrial wastewaters pose a serious threat to the environment and human health. Microalgae are increasingly being recognized as potential solutions for removing pollutants through biosorption due to their unique cell wall structure. The review focuses on the composition and structure of microalgae cell walls in heavy metal removal, as well as commonly used models to predict the velocity and capacity of biosorption by microalgae.

Biosorption of heavy metal ions by green alga Neochloris oleoabundans: Effects of metal ion properties and cell wall structure

Siwei Gu et al.

Summary: The effects of metal ion properties and the cell wall structure of green alga Neochloris oleoabundans on five selected heavy metal ions were investigated. Pb(II) showed the strongest inhibitive effects on the adsorption of other metal ions, followed by Cu(II). The adsorption capacity of N. oleoabundans biomass to the tested two-valence metal ions is proportional to the electronegativity and inversely proportional to the radius of the metal ions.
