Exploring the role of forest biomass in abating fossil CO2 emissions in the iron and steel industry - The case of Sweden

Chinedu Maureen Nwachukwu et al.

Summary: This study examines the feasibility of using forest biomass in iron and steel production to reduce CO2 emissions, and through a spatially explicit cost optimization model, it is found that maximizing the use of biomass-based products can result in a 43% reduction in CO2 emissions. Additionally, results suggest that increasing biomass utilization through substitution targets is more effective than carbon pricing policy.

Exergy analysis of hydrogen-reduction based steel production with coal gasification-shaft furnace-electric furnace process

Feng Li et al.

Summary: The utilization of carbon-free energy in steel production, specifically the coal gasification-shaft furnace-electric furnace (CSE) technology using hydrogen-enriched gas, has a great potential for energy-saving and low carbon development in China. Material flow analysis and exergy assessment have revealed areas for improvement in energy efficiency, with a focus on heat recovery in the coal gasification and pelletizing systems. Increasing the H-2 content in the reducing gas may lead to a slight increase in exergy efficiency of the shaft furnace, but at the cost of significantly higher demand volume of reducing gas. Balancing environmental benefits, energy utilization, and production cost is essential for the success of hydrogen reduction based steelmaking processes.

Life-cycle assessment of the coal gasification-shaft furnace-electric furnace steel production process

Feng Li et al.

Summary: The CSE steelmaking technology has gained attention for its environmental and economic benefits, with a life cycle assessment showing lower environmental impacts compared to the traditional BF-BOF process. Key contributors to environmental impacts are the electric arc furnace, decarburization, pelletizing, and gas heating plants.

Marcio A. F. Martins et al.

Summary: The novel EMPC strategy proposed in this study combines Deep Learning Neural Network models to optimize and control PSA units in real time, achieving high efficiency and low cost applications. Through software-in-the-loop testing, the robustness of the EMPC controller against plant-model mismatch was demonstrated. EMPC successfully maximizes CO2 recovery and CO2 purity while meeting the key operating endpoint constraint of H2/CO ratio.

On the reduction of electric energy consumption in electrolysis: A thermodynamic study

Deepinder Jot Singh Aulakh et al.

Summary: This study aims to reduce the production cost of hydrogen via electrolysis by using thermal energy instead of electric energy, ultimately achieving hydrogen production at higher temperatures through electrolysis. By supplementing the inlet steam with thermal energy from another process, the electricity demand can be significantly reduced, leading to cost savings and improved efficiency.

Hydrogen costs from water electrolysis at high temperature and pressure

Thomas Holm et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the economics of water electrolysis under high temperature and pressure conditions, finding that the lowest cost and energy consumption for hydrogen occurred at 270-310°C and 700 bar. There is a trade-off between improved kinetics at higher temperatures and increased operating costs due to high water activities.

Recent development in electrocatalysts for hydrogen production through water electrolysis

Shams Anwar et al.

Summary: Hydrogen is a carbon-free alternative energy source for future energy frameworks, offering environmental friendliness and high energy density. Water electrolysis is a sustainable method to produce high purity hydrogen, and developing electrocatalysts for this process is crucial. While precious metals are traditionally used for electrocatalysis, non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts have advantages in cost and eco-friendliness, but further research is needed for their development.
