Mountain Permafrost Hydrology-A Practical Review Following Studies from the Andes

Lukas U. Arenson et al.

Summary: Climate change is expected to reduce water security in arid mountain regions, particularly vulnerable water supplies in semi-arid zones. While glacier hydrology has received significant attention, there is relatively little known about mountain permafrost hydrology, indicating a need for further research.

A Framework for Modeling Rock Glaciers and Permafrost at the Basin-Scale in High Alpine Catchments

L. Pruessner et al.

Summary: Rock glaciers and permafrost may serve as important water reservoirs in the future, requiring distributed runoff models for estimation. A new model integrating permafrost and rock glaciers in Alpine catchments is introduced and compared to existing models.

How Much of the Earth's Surface is Underlain by Permafrost?

J. Obu

Summary: The commonly reported estimate that permafrost underlies a quarter of the Northern Hemisphere is actually an overstatement. Permafrost underlies approximately 15% of the Northern Hemisphere, which is about three times smaller than the commonly reported estimate. This commentary highlights possible reasons for this overestimation and provides permafrost area estimates for different parts of the globe.

Ice content and interannual water storage changes of an active rock glacier in the dry Andes of Argentina

Christian Halla et al.

Summary: Quantification of ice and water content in active rock glaciers in the Andes of Argentina is crucial for estimating their role as water stores and contributors to runoff in dry mountain catchments. Despite their potential as important water reservoirs, water storage capacities and interannual changes have not been quantified in detailed field studies.
