Efficient removal of microplastics from wastewater by an electrocoagulation process

Maocai Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal performance, mechanism, and influencing factors of microplastics in wastewater treatment by electrocoagulation (EC). It was found that aluminum anode EC is an effective method to remove microplastics with a removal rate above 80%. The efficiency of microplastic removal by EC is influenced by electrolyte concentration and applied voltage density, with flocculation and charge neutralization occurring simultaneously during the process.

Adsorption behavior of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) on aged microplastics in antibiotics-heavy metals coexisting system

Ziqing Zhou et al.

Summary: Antibiotics have complex impacts on the adsorption behavior of heavy metals on aged microplastics, showing opposite effects on Cu(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption. The presence of antibiotics seemed to have no significant effect on the type of adsorption isotherm and kinetic model in most Cu(II) adsorption systems.

Effects of influent physicochemical characteristics on air dissolution, bubble size and rise velocity in dissolved air flotation: A review

Nalaka Rajapakse et al.

Summary: Microbubble aided clarification is widely used in many industries due to its high efficiency and compact unit size. Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is the most common method for generating microbubbles. Various physicochemical parameters of the influent can have significant impacts on the performance of DAF units. This article reviews the effects of viscosity, salinity, temperature, pH, zeta potential, surface tension, solid content, particle size, and hydraulic loading rate on air dissolution, bubble size distribution, and bubble rise velocity. The findings provide important insights for the design and operation of DAF units to improve separation efficiencies.

Removal of microplastics and attached heavy metals from secondary effluent of wastewater treatment plant using interpenetrating bipolar plate electrocoagulation

Runyu Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the mixed pollutants of microplastics and heavy metals were effectively removed from the secondary effluent of a wastewater treatment plant using an interpenetrating bipolar plate electrocoagulation (IBPE) reactor. The experimental process showed high removal efficiency for both heavy metals and microplastics. The optimization of removal efficiency was achieved with specific current density, initial pH, and reaction time. Mathematical models and pseudo-voltammetry curve analysis provided insights into the changes in removal rate over time and the complexation forms of heavy metals and surface groups of microplastics. The results suggested that IBPE could be a valuable clean technology for simultaneously removing microplastics and heavy metals from wastewater.

Surfactant changes lead adsorption behaviors and mechanisms on microplastics

Maocai Shen et al.

Summary: The addition of surfactants improved the adsorption capacity of microplastics for lead ions, with SDBS significantly enhancing the adsorption compared to TX100 and HDPB. The adsorption efficiency of microplastics for Pb2+ initially increased and then decreased with increasing adsorption time and Pb2+ concentration. The pH of the solution had a significant influence on the adsorption of Pb2+ by microplastics.

Effects of microplastic accumulation on floc characteristics and fouling behavior in a membrane bioreactor

Thitiwut Maliwan et al.

Summary: The presence of microplastics in sewage sludge during wastewater treatment in a membrane bioreactor system decreased sludge floc size and hydrophobicity, and had a slight impact on microbial structure. Microplastics also acted as a scouring material on membrane surfaces, affecting biofilm structures and reducing severe cake fouling in the system operated for up to 4 months.
