Harnessing Noncovalent Interactions for a Directed Evolution of a Six-Component Molecular Crystal

Sucharita Mandal et al.

Summary: A six-component crystal is designed based on weak orthogonal interactions in supramolecular chemistry, utilizing five distinctly different noncovalent forces. The use of tuned range-separated (RS)-DFT calculations is found effective in describing ionic interactions in molecular solids, and the strong electrostatic interactions between ion-pairs are the primary driving force for stabilizing the six-component crystal. Mixing strong and weak intermolecular interactions may lead to the generation of exotic molecular complexity like n-component crystals.

Iodoperchlorobenzene acts as a dual halogen-bond donor to template a [2+2] cycloaddition reaction within an organic co-crystal

Nicole M. Shapiro et al.

Summary: Three isostructural co-crystals utilizing iodoperchlorobenzene as a dual halogen-bond donor are formed, held together by IMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSISN and ClMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSISN halogen bonds to create one-dimensional polymeric chains. Interestingly, these co-crystals are structurally similar to those based on 1,4-diiodoperchlorobenzene. Notably, the co-crystal containing trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene undergoes a nearly complete [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction.

Variable stoichiometry cocrystals: occurrence and significance

Basanta Saikia et al.

Summary: The occurrence of variable stoichiometry cocrystals provides the possibility of acquiring more solid forms of the same system. The control of stoichiometry is crucial for maintaining purity and protecting intellectual property rights. Analyses of structures, synthetic methodologies, and properties of reported variable stoichiometry organic cocrystals in the past decade have been conducted, with discussions on their controlled production for drug formulation purposes. This review also aims to provide an understanding of the factors responsible for the variation in stoichiometry in cocrystals, which mainly stems from differences in properties covered by intellectual property rights.
