Hydrogen Bonding Enhances the Electrochemical Hydrogenation of Benzaldehyde in the Aqueous Phase

Udishnu Sanyal et al.

Summary: The hydrogenation of benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol is significantly promoted by the presence of polar co-adsorbates like substituted phenols, facilitated by external potential. These co-adsorbates enhance the hydrogenation rate by polarizing the carbonyl group and increasing the likelihood of forming a transition state for H addition, leading to a faster hydrogenation route involving phenol as a conduit for proton addition.

Electrochemical Routes for the Valorization of Biomass-Derived Feedstocks: From Chemistry to Application

Francisco W. S. Lucas et al.

Summary: The drive to reduce fossil resource consumption and increase renewable electricity capacity has led to exploration of new routes for sustainable production of fuels, chemicals, and materials. Biomass is a potential source of platform precursors due to its ability to fix CO2 in the form of multi-carbon organic molecules. Electrochemical methods for biomass valorization are intriguing, but there is a need to evaluate this field objectively and identify pathways suited to electrochemistry.

Acrylonitrile Conversion on Metal Cathodes: How Surface Adsorption Determines the Reduction Pathways

Shutao Wu et al.

Summary: The electrochemical dimerization of acrylonitrile on metal cathodes is a simple and green method for producing adiponitrile, the raw material for nylon 66. The production rate of ADN and byproducts is highly related to the surface adsorption state, where high ADN selectivity is obtained when the surface is mainly covered by AN. Substitution of AN with hydrogen promotes surface hydrogenation to form propionitrile, while a full coverage of hydrogen exclusively leads to hydrogen evolution.

Identification of the hydrogen utilization pathway for the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of phenol

Ling Zhou et al.

Summary: The study focuses on electrochemical hydrogenation of biomass-derived platform molecules using PtRh bimetallic nanoparticles on mesoporous carbon nanospheres. The research shows that the overlapping d-orbitals of Pt and Rh enhance specific adsorption of phenol, while the incorporation of Rh weakens the alloy-H-ad interaction. Additionally, DFT calculations confirm the selectivity difference and parallel pathways of electrochemical hydrogenation.

Selective electrochemical hydrogenation of furfural to 2-methylfuran over a single atom Cu catalyst under mild pH conditions†

Peng Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, high faradaic efficiencies for furfuryl alcohol and 2-methylfuran were achieved in near-neutral conditions through the integration of single atom copper active sites and phosphorus dopants in a single catalyst. Single atom Cu sites were identified as the active centers for the reaction, leading to enhanced efficiencies by suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Phosphorus doping facilitated furfural hydrogenation to 2-methylfuran via a sequential two-step reduction process, opening up possibilities for selective electrochemical hydrogenation under mild conditions.
