Exclusive Strain Effect Boosts Overall Water Splitting in PdCu/Ir Core/Shell Nanocrystals

Menggang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, precise synthesis of PdCu/Ir core/shell nanocrystals was reported, which significantly boosted oxygen evolution reaction (OER) through the exclusive strain effect. The compressive strain in the Ir shell downshifted the d-band center and weakened the binding of the intermediates, leading to enhanced OER activity. The strained nanocrystals also exhibited improved hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, making them excellent catalysts for overall water-splitting electrocatalysis.

Weakening Intermediate Bindings on CuPd/Pd Core/shell Nanoparticles to Achieve Pt-Like Bifunctional Activity for Hydrogen Evolution and Oxygen Reduction Reactions

Huan Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, CuPd/Pd core/shell nanoparticles with an ultrathin Pd shell were developed, exhibiting Pt-like bifunctional activity for HER and ORR in acid electrolytes. Density functional theory calculations showed that the significantly enhanced HER/ORR activity on CuPd/Pd core/shell NPs with 0.5 nm Pd shell was attributed to the compressive strain induced downshift of d-band center for Pd, weakening the binding strength of intermediates and promoting reaction kinetics.
