Cancer statistics, 2022

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

Silver Nanoparticles: An Instantaneous Solution for Anticancer Activity against Human Liver (HepG2) and Breast (MCF-7) Cancer Cells

Abdulaziz A. Al-Khedhairy et al.

Summary: This study describes a method for controlling the growth of cancer cells by using colloidal silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) processed via homemade solutions. AgNPs exhibit excellent control of the growth rate of human liver and breast cancer cells, even at low concentrations. AgNPs also induce cytotoxic effects by increasing the production of reactive oxygen species and regulating the expression of apoptotic and anti-apoptotic genes.

Assessment of behavioral changes and antitumor effects of silver nanoparticles synthesized using diosgenin in mice model

Uma Maheshwari Rajadurai et al.

Summary: The study conducted a comparative assessment of the anxiolytic, antidepressant, and antitumor effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized using diosgenin, a saponin derived from Dioscorea oppositifolia. The AgNPs showed promising results in reducing anxiety and depression, as well as exhibiting antitumor properties in vivo. These findings suggest that AgNPs synthesized with diosgenin could be a valuable candidate for the development of novel medications for anxiety, depression, and cancer treatment.

The mechanism of cell death induced by silver nanoparticles is distinct from silver cations

Monica M. Rohde et al.

Summary: The study identified distinct responses of cells to AgNPs and Ag+. AgNPs induce cell death through lipid peroxidation leading to proteotoxicity and necrotic cell death, while Ag+ triggers oxidative stress and apoptotic cell death by increasing H2O2 levels. The mechanism by which AgNPs kill mammalian cells was found to be independent of the contribution of Ag+ released in extracellular media.

Salvadora persica mediated synthesis of silver nanoparticles and their antimicrobial efficacy

Hammad Arshad et al.

Summary: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized using an aqueous 'root extract' of Salvadora persica (Sp) plant as a reducing agent exhibited significantly higher antimicrobial efficacy compared to earlier studies. Characterization of the synthesized particles showed a spherical and rod nature with an average size of 37.5 nm, and the presence of the cubic structure of Ag confirmed the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. Antimicrobial activity testing demonstrated a high inhibition for two bacterial pathogens, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis, with minimum inhibitory concentrations of 0.39 μg/mL and 0.78 μg/mL for E. coli and 0.19 μg/mL and 0.39 μg/mL for S. epidermidis, respectively.

Summary: A simple and green colorimetric sensing assay strategy for highly efficient determination of melamine was developed based on the redox reaction of gallic acid with Ag+. Using gallic acid as a reducing and stabilizing agent, monodispersed Ag nanoparticles were obtained. The aggregation of AgNPs, attributed to the formation of hydrogen bonds between melamine and gallic acid, enables rapid detection of melamine concentration with a low detection limit.
