The Combined Effects of SST and the North Atlantic Subtropical High-Pressure System on the Atlantic Basin Tropical Cyclone Interannual Variability

Albenis Perez-Alarcon et al.

Summary: This study explores the combined impact of sea surface temperature (SST) and the North Atlantic subtropical high-pressure system (NASH) on the interannual variability of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis and landfalling. Different regions show variations in both genesis and landfalling, with SST primarily modulating the frequency of TCs formed near the West African coast and NASH affecting those originated in the Lesser Antilles arc. SST and NASH explain a significant portion of the variability in landfalling in certain regions, highlighting the complexity of atmospheric processes involved in TC genesis and landfalling.

Comparative climatology of outer tropical cyclone size using radial wind profiles

Albenis Perez-Alarcon et al.

Summary: A comparative climatology of outer tropical cyclone size using radial wind profiles was conducted, with findings showing that tropical cyclones are largest between 700 and 800 km in size when they reach maximum wind speeds of 20 to 40 m/s. The global mean size was determined to be 748.7 km, with the largest median storm size in the North Atlantic basin and the smallest in the North Indian Ocean.

Extreme precipitation events in the Mediterranean area: contrasting two different models for moisture source identification

Sara Cloux et al.

Summary: Concern about heavy precipitation events has increased in southern Europe, particularly the Mediterranean region. This study compared two methodologies to quantify moisture sources in flooding episodes, finding that while the Lagrangian FLEXPART-WRF model showed acceptable skill in identifying local and medium-distance sources, it underestimated remote sources like tropical areas. The study noted that these over- and underestimates should be considered when drawing conclusions from this widely used Lagrangian offline analysis.

The residence time of water vapour in the atmosphere

Luis Gimeno et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance and influencing factors of atmospheric water vapour residence time, indicating an expected increase in residence time with climate warming. Factors such as evaporation, precipitation, and atmospheric humidity play a role in shaping water vapour residence time, with future research focusing on data integration and dynamic simulations.
