Self-driven dual hydrogen production system based on a bifunctional single-atomic Rh catalyst

Xianyun Peng et al.

Summary: A novel self-driven dual hydrogen production system has been proposed for efficient hydrogen production using highly-dispersed single Rh atoms supported on a catalyst. The system achieves an ultra-high H-2 generation rate and exhibits remarkable catalytic activities towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR). Experimental results and density functional theory calculations confirm the excellent catalytic properties of the catalyst.

Tailoring the 3d-orbital electron filling degree of metal center to boost alkaline hydrogen evolution electrocatalysis

Yana Men et al.

Summary: Tailoring the 3d-orbital electron filling degree of Co center in CoP can enhance the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance at the atomic level, with water dissociation step identified as the root of sluggish alkaline HER kinetics. By doping Se into CoP, remarkable HER performance was achieved, and this design principle can also be applied to other anions-doped CoP for rational design of transition metal-based electrocatalysts towards alkaline HER.

Energy-saving hydrogen production by chlorine-free hybrid seawater splitting coupling hydrazine degradation

Fu Sun et al.

Summary: A potential solution to grid-scale production of carbon-neutral hydrogen energy without reliance on freshwater is demonstrated through chlorine-free hydrogen production by hybrid seawater splitting coupling hydrazine degradation. The electrolyzer achieves a high hydrogen production rate at low electricity expense and avoids chlorine electrochemistry in complex chemical environments. By integrating low-voltage direct hydrazine fuel cells or solar cells, self-powered hybrid seawater electrolysis is realized, enabling efficient conversion of ocean resources to hydrogen fuel while removing harmful pollutants.

Fabrication strategies of porous precious-metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting: Recent advances

Jin-Tao Ren et al.

Summary: Utilizing renewable energy to perform electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production is a promising approach to address energy crisis and environmental pollution. The development of low-cost electrocatalysts with high and stable activity for both HER and OER is a key challenge for large-scale water electrolysis. Recent innovations in porous non-noble-metal materials, including heteroatom-doped carbon-based and transition metal-based materials, have shown excellent electrocatalytic performance for overall water splitting. Understanding the structure-activity correlation of these materials provides insights for designing highly efficient electrocatalysts based on non-precious carbon or metal materials in the future.
