Wet High-Intensity Magnetic Separators (WHIMS) for Recovering Iron from Tailings Deposited in Dams

Rafaella Bicalho da Rocha et al.

Summary: The iron ore tailings dams in Quadrilatero Ferrifero, Minas Gerais, Brazil, are full and pose significant risks. Recovering the iron content of approximately 30% in these tailings is crucial for reducing environmental impact and increasing production. The study found that magnetic concentration of processing plant tailings can achieve a 63% iron grade concentrate with a mass recovery of around 15%, indicating the importance of implementing cleaning stages in the process.

Review of closed water loops with ore sorting and tailings valorisation for a more sustainable mining industry

Paivi Kinnunen et al.

Summary: Conservation and management of freshwater resources is a major challenge of this century, especially in mining where controlling water intake and effluents quantity and quality is crucial. Closed water loops require new water quality control methods, and geopolymerisation of tailings has potential for use in covering deposited tailings. Detecting and classifying ore types in mining has a significant impact on metal recovery and process water quality.

Summary: The research tested the applicability of the UNFC concept to metalliferous tailings mining projects, focusing on economic aspects. Different scenarios for resource recovery and rehabilitation of the tailings storage facility were defined and evaluated, with a risk assessment highlighting the need for actions to protect human health and the environment. The study also pointed out the necessity for stronger user guidance and more detailed subcategorisation in the assessment and classification process to fully realize the potential of the UNFC concept.

The Effects of Milling and pH on Co, Ni, Zn and Cu Bioleaching from Polymetallic Sulfide Concentrate

Jarno Makinen et al.

Summary: The study focused on acid bioleaching of a low-grade and polymetallic sulfide concentrate to determine the suitable feed material particle size and pH for efficient leaching of valuable metals. The best leaching yields for cobalt and nickel were achieved with particle size less than 19 μm at pH 1.3. Additional milling to decrease particle size had a major positive effect on leaching yields.

Potential of Tailing Deposits in Chile for the Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide Produced by Power Plants Using Ex-Situ Mineral Carbonation

Oscar Marin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of copper tailing deposits in Chile for sequestration of CO2 through mineral carbonation, while integrating the recovery of valuable metals. The research identified optimal locations for mineral carbonation plants in the Antofagasta region and estimated the CO2 sequestration potential of five tailing deposits. Additionally, it examined the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of capturing, separating, and transporting CO2 from sources to mineral carbonation plants, especially considering the significant CO2 production from thermoelectric plants in the region.
