Wind and solar generation may reduce the inter-annual variability of peak residual load in certain electricity systems

H. Tyler Ruggles et al.

Summary: This study examines the variability of peak residual load in electricity systems with the addition of variable renewable power sources, such as wind and solar. It suggests that the inter-annual variability in peak residual load may decrease with added solar generation during summer peak load periods, due to correlations between solar availability and peak electric load usage for air conditioning. Additionally, the inter-annual variability in peak residual load may decrease with added wind generation in systems with a winter peaking load.

Promoting reproducibility and increased collaboration in electric sector capacity expansion models with community benchmarking and intercomparison efforts

Candise L. Henry et al.

Summary: Capacity expansion models in the electric sector are commonly used for policy analysis and planning, but differences in parameters and structures lead to diverse results. Through a benchmarking effort using simplified scenarios and a common dataset, specific structural differences among models can be pinpointed, improving consistency and building confidence in models while identifying areas for further research and development. Introducing an open-source test dataset can promote collaboration among energy modelers and increase transparency for stakeholders such as policymakers.

Approaches to cost-effective near-net zero energy new homes with time-of-use value of energy and battery storage

Max Wei et al.

Summary: California mandates near-net zero energy building standards for all new residential buildings starting January 2020, with rooftop solar PV required in new homes under three stories tall. Despite available technologies, scaling up NZEB homes in California presents significant challenges. A novel modeling and cost-effective analysis for new single-family homes is proposed to guide design of cost-effective near-NZEB homes and inform future updates to building standards.
