Ni-enhanced molybdenum carbide loaded N-doped graphitized carbon as bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Baoli Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a bifunctional electrocatalyst composed of Ni nanoparticles and Mo2C nanoparticles supported on N-doped graphitized carbon (NC) was successfully proposed via one-step pyrolysis method. The synergistic effects among Ni, Mo2C, and NC led to increased active sites, reduced energy barriers, and facilitated electron transfer, resulting in enhanced catalytic performance for both oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline electrolyte. This promising catalyst showed stability for 24 hours and has potential for industrial applications, providing a new route for transforming low-value biomass into high-value energy conversion materials.

Bifunctional water splitting enhancement by manipulating Mo-H bonding energy of transition Metal-Mo2C heterostructure catalysts

Yao Xu et al.

Summary: Molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) catalysts embedded in N-doped carbon sheets with transition metals (Ni, Co, or Fe) were synthesized to enhance the intrinsic activity of Mo2C by optimizing the Mo-H bonding energy. The Ni/Mo2C-NCSs exhibited the lowest overpotential for HER, while the Fe/Mo2C-NCSs showed the lowest overpotential for OER at a current density of 100 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH. Density function theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the interface between Mo2C and Ni hybrid provided the most superior H adsorption site, achieving a fast desorption process in HER. An alkaline electrolyzer with Ni/Mo2C-NCSs cathode and Fe/Mo2C-NCSs anode demonstrated a small voltage of 1.66 V at a current density of 100 mA cm-2. This work offers a detailed interface engineering strategy to enhance the intrinsic catalytic activity of Mo2C.

Molybdenum carbide nanoparticles assembling in diverse heteroatoms doped carbon matrix as efficient hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts in acidic and alkaline medium

Shifan Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the synthesis of ultrafine molybdenum carbide nanocrystals assembling in a boron, nitrogen co-doped carbon matrix using a bottom-up strategy, enhancing the dispersibility and active sites for hydrogen evolution reaction. Compared to monoheteroatom modification, the B and N simultaneously modified catalyst is shown to be versatile in catalyzing HER in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. N-doping facilitates proton capturing in acid while B-doping assists water adsorption and dissociation in alkali.
