Risk Factors for Delta Hepatitis in a North American Cohort: Who Should Be Screened?

Ben L. Da et al.

Summary: The study revealed that in North American HBV patients, risk factors such as intravenous drug use, low HBV-DNA levels, elevated alanine aminotransferase levels, and origin from HDV-endemic countries are independently associated with HDV infection. Therefore, screening for HDV is recommended for HBV patients in North America who have significant risk factors.

The changing context of hepatitis D

Mario Rizzetto et al.

Summary: The global epidemiology of hepatitis D is changing with the widespread implementation of hepatitis B vaccination. In high-income countries, the epidemiology of chronic hepatitis D is dual, with distinct characteristics observed in endemic countries. Despite recent progress, therapeutic management of HDV remains unsatisfactory.

Summary: The study found that low levels of HDV-RNA detected during and after interferon therapy are associated with a high risk for post-treatment relapse.

The medical impact of hepatitis D virus infection in Asia and Africa; time for a reappraisal

Mario Rizzetto et al.

Summary: Hepatitis D is considered a significant medical issue in Africa and various parts of Asia, yet the distribution and prevalence of HDV infection varies greatly and can be inconsistent or conflicting due to methodological issues. A uniform clinical approach is needed for testing patients with chronic HDV disease in order to address these discrepancies.

Role of hepatitis D virus infection in development of hepatocellular carcinoma among chronic hepatitis B patients treated with nucleotide/nucleoside analogues

Tyng-Yuan Jang et al.

Summary: This study found that hepatitis D virus (HDV) viremia plays a crucial role in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in chronic hepatitis B patients undergoing nucleotide/nucleoside analogues (NAs) therapy, particularly in cirrhotic patients.

Hepatitis D virus in 2021: virology, immunology and new treatment approaches for a difficult-to-treat disease

Stephan Urban et al.

Summary: Approximately 5% of individuals infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) are coinfected with hepatitis D virus (HDV), leading to unfavorable outcomes such as liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Recent advancements in understanding HDV virology and immunology have facilitated the development of specific antiviral drugs and potentially immunotherapeutic strategies. Novel treatment options, including the entry-inhibitor bulevirtide and prenylation inhibitor lonafarnib, show promise in making HDV a less difficult-to-treat virus.

Is hepatitis delta underestimated?

Margarita Papatheodoridi et al.

Summary: Hepatitis D virus may be underestimated, especially in HBsAg-positive patients, with prevalence rates possibly higher than expected and showing stable or increasing trends globally. HDV infection is associated with an increased risk of progression to cirrhosis and HCC, particularly in patients with HIV co-infection.

Summary: This study validated the use of HBV and HCV diagnosis codes for identifying infections, finding high specificity but low sensitivity. Diagnostic models consistently outperformed prognostic models, with no major differences observed among subgroups.
