Disorder upon disorder: Localization effects in the Kitaev spin liquid

Wen-Han Kao et al.

Summary: This study explores the response of the Kitaev QSL to various forms of disorder, revealing that quenched disorder can lead to Anderson localization of Majorana fermions and the appearance of Lifshitz tails. Disorder effects on low-energy Majorana fermion modes can be detected in thermal transport, with Z2 fluxes becoming thermally excited at finite temperatures, dominating as a source of disorder at high temperatures. The energy spectrum and thermal transport properties of disordered Kitaev QSL strongly depend on the character of disorder, with site disorder and bond randomness suppressing longitudinal thermal conductivity while low-energy localization is stronger with site disorder.

Electric Probe for the Toric Code Phase in Kitaev Materials through the Hyperfine Interaction

Masahiko G. Yamada et al.

Summary: The Kitaev model features gapped and gapless spin liquid phases, potentially realized in iridates and alpha-RuCl3. Recent experiments in alpha-RuCl3 observed the transition to a gapped toric code phase, with a mechanism proposed for electrically detecting this nematic transition. This proposed method involves a virtual state with a nonzero electric quadrupole moment appearing in second-order perturbation, allowing for the direct detection of the realization of Kitaev's toric error-correction code.

Half-integer quantized anomalous thermal Hall effect in the Kitaev material candidate α-RuCl3

T. Yokoi et al.

Summary: Recent reports have shown the presence of half-integer thermal quantum Hall conductance in the two-dimensional honeycomb material alpha-RuCl3, even in magnetic fields without out-of-plane components. The measured field-angular variation of the quantized thermal Hall conductance in alpha-RuCl3 has the same sign structure as the topological Chern number of the pure Kitaev spin liquid, indicating that the non-Abelian topological order persists in the presence of non-Kitaev interactions.

Topological nematic phase transition in Kitaev magnets under applied magnetic fields

Masahiro O. Takahashi et al.

Summary: Researchers propose a scenario for realizing the toric code phase in candidate materials of Kitaev magnets, which could potentially be used for fault-tolerant quantum computation. The study demonstrates that four-body interactions among Majorana fermions in the Kitaev spin liquid state can induce a nematic phase transition of Majorana bonds, leading to a gapful spin liquid state with zero Chern number, known as the toric code phase. This potentially explains the topological nematic transition observed in alpha-RuCl3 recently.

Topological Z2 invariant in Kitaev spin liquids: Classification of gapped spin liquids beyond projective symmetry group

Masahiko G. Yamada

Summary: A projective symmetry group (PSG) has been considered as a classification theory for spin liquids, but it lacks the classification of fermionic spinon excitations with symmetry-protected topological order. By studying the Kitaev model on the square-octagon lattice, we demonstrate a classification beyond PSG, identifying a hidden class of topological Kitaev spin liquids with helical edge states, distinguished by a topological Z(2) invariant defined by time-reversal and translation symmetries. This suggests the existence of an unknown classification scheme for gapped spin liquids beyond PSG.
