Adsorption of ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and paracetamol onto activated carbon prepared from effluent treatment plant sludge of the beverage industry

Angelica F. M. Streit et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of sludge-derived activated carbons for pharmaceuticals adsorption in aqueous media. The ABSAC showed superior adsorption efficiency compared to BSAC, with higher surface area and total pore volume. The adsorbent proved to be highly efficient in removing pharmaceutical compounds in a simulated drug effluent, making it a promising candidate for treating pharmaceutical contaminants in industrial wastewater.

Removal of levofloxacin through adsorption and peroxymonosulfate activation using carbothermal reduction synthesized nZVI/carbon fiber

Weitong Tan et al.

Summary: Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) is widely used for decontamination, but faces issues such as agglomeration and oxidation. In this study, nZVI supported on cotton carbon fiber (nZVI/CF) was synthesized through carbothermal reduction of cotton fiber to address these issues, showing synergistic adsorption and activation for removing levofloxacin (LEV). The nZVI/CF-900-0.3 system exhibited excellent long-term stability and high efficiency in degrading LEV under PMS activation, with sulfate radicals playing a crucial role in the degradation process.

The role of dissolved oxygen in the sulfite/divalent transition metal ion system: degradation performances and mechanisms

Qian Xiao et al.

Summary: The study introduced a sulfite/Fe(II) system to efficiently degrade BrO3- and HA, with Fe2+ and sulfite radicals leading to rapid BrO3- reduction under low dissolved oxygen concentrations, while hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radicals contributed to fast HA degradation under high dissolved oxygen concentrations. Control of dissolved oxygen levels could manage degradation mechanisms. Increasing Fe(II) and S(IV) concentrations and decreasing pH and dissolved oxygen levels facilitated BrO3- reduction by increasing reactive species.

Peroxymonosulfate activation through LED-induced ZnFe2O4 for levofloxacin degradation

Yiwen Zhong et al.

Summary: This study reported an integrated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process by coupling ZnFe2O4 (ZFO) with energy-saving LED for degradation and defluorination of levofloxacin (LEV). The degradation efficiency reached 88.52% within 180 min in the ZFO-500/LED/PMS system, generating SO4-center dot and center dot OH radicals. Possible degradation pathways and mechanisms were proposed, showing promising LED-assisted PMS activation process for antibiotic degradation.
