Aqueous production of secondary organic aerosol from fossil-fuel emissions in winter Beijing haze

Junfeng Wang et al.

Summary: Field observations during a winter haze event in Beijing reveal fast aqueous-phase conversion of fossil-fuel primary organic aerosol (POA) to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) at high relative humidity. It is suggested that ring-breaking oxidation of POA aromatic species may be the dominant mechanism for SOA formation. This POA origin for SOA could explain why SOA has been decreasing despite flat emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over the years 2013-2018.

Detection of organosulfates and nitrooxy-organosulfates in Arctic and Antarctic atmospheric aerosols, using ultra-high resolution FT-ICR mass spectrometry

Yuqing Ye et al.

Summary: Organosulfates (OSs) are recognized as important secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) in polar atmospheres, with a wide concentration range and significant impact on climate. They are influenced by photo-oxidation and long-range air-mass transport, originating from biogenic precursors and human activities. Further research is needed to quantify, understand formation mechanisms, and assess the impacts of OSs on climate in the polar regions.

Anthropogenic-Biogenic Interactions at Night: Enhanced Formation of Secondary Aerosols and Particulate Nitrogen- and Sulfur-Containing Organics from β-Pinene Oxidation

Li Xu et al.

Summary: This study found that under dark conditions, the aerosol yield can be significantly enhanced by nitrogen dioxide or sulfur dioxide within a certain ratio range of inorganic gases to biogenic volatile organic compounds, while ammonia showed a slight increase. The nitrogen- and sulfur-containing aerosol components were derived from nitrogen dioxide, ammonia, and sulfur dioxide, with organic nitrates and organosulfates identified in the experiments. These interactions among various compounds during the night could serve as a potential pathway for the formation of particulate nitrogen- and sulfur-containing organics in polluted regions with both anthropogenic and biogenic influences.

Molecular Dynamics and Light Absorption Properties of Atmospheric Dissolved Organic Matter

Hongxing Jiang et al.

Summary: This study used Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and light absorption measurements to characterize atmospheric dissolved organic matter (ADOM) in aerosol samples from Guangzhou, revealing the influence of environmental factors on the molecular composition and light absorption properties of BrC. Nitrogen-containing species played a key role in the variation of BrC light absorption. Meteorological conditions and anthropogenic activities were identified as the main drivers of BrC composition.

Importance of Oxidants and Temperature in the Formation of Biogenic Organosulfates and Nitrooxy Organosulfates

Daniel J. Bryant et al.

Summary: This study investigated the formation and characteristics of biogenic secondary organic aerosol (BSOA) by collecting atmospheric samples at an urban site in Guangzhou, China. Results showed significant diurnal variations in monoterpene derived OSs and NOSs, with peak concentrations at night, and seasonal differences in isoprene derived OSs/NOSs, with exponential increases observed at temperatures above 30 degrees C. The study provided further insights into the formation mechanisms of biogenically derived OS and NOS in highly anthropogenically influenced environments.

Summary: This study quantitatively characterized isoprene-derived OSs in PM2.5 collected from 20 ground sites across the U.S., revealing significant differences in iOS concentrations between the eastern and western regions. In summer, iOSs accounted for 29% of OrgS mass in the eastern U.S., while only 6% in the western U.S.

Summary: This study analyzed organic aerosol (OA) in PM2.5 samples from three cities in China, revealing significant differences in the chemical characteristics of organic compounds between cities. Samples from Changchun had higher levels of polyaromatics, while samples from Shanghai and Guangzhou showed higher levels of oxidation processes in organic compounds. Sulfur-containing compounds were mainly aliphatic with low degrees of unsaturation and aromaticity in all cities.

Summary: This study investigated the hygroscopic properties and cloud condensation nucleation activities of organosulfates (OSs) under varying humidity conditions. It was found that only a few types of OSs deliquesce with increasing humidity, while others exhibit certain hygroscopic growth. The research provided insights into the interactions of OSs with water vapor, contributing valuable information for a better understanding of secondary organic aerosols.
