Thermodynamics of free and bound magnons in graphene

Andrew T. Pierce et al.

Summary: The passage discusses the ferromagnetic phase observed in the quantum Hall effect and the study of related magnon excitations. By measuring the electron compressibility under the influence of magnons, a reduction in the gap of the quantum Hall state is revealed. The analysis suggests injected magnons bind with electrons and holes to form skyrmions, allowing the extraction of free magnon density, magnon chemical potential, and average skyrmion spin.

Visualizing broken symmetry and topological defects in a quantum Hall ferromagnet

Xiaomeng Liu et al.

Summary: The interaction between electrons in graphene under high magnetic fields leads to the formation of various quantum Hall ferromagnetic (QHFM) phases with broken spin or valley symmetry. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), we were able to visualize atomic-scale electronic wave functions and observe valley ordering in QHFM phases, as well as spectral features of fractional quantum Hall phases in graphene. The results provide insights into the electronic properties of materials and their topological excitations.

Coexistence of Canted Antiferromagnetism and Bond Order in ν=0 Graphene

Ankur Das et al.

Summary: Motivated by experiments on graphene in the quantum Hall regime, this study revisits the phase diagram of a single sheet of graphene at charge neutrality and presents the finding of a coexistence region of magnetic and bond orders. This result provides a possible explanation for experimental observations on the quantum Hall effect in graphene.

Spin and valley ordering of fractional quantum Hall states in monolayer graphene

Ngoc Duc Le et al.

Summary: This article investigates the spin and valley ordering in quantum Hall fractions in monolayer graphene, taking into account the effect of realistic anisotropies. The study reveals different phases for different filling factors, including ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, charge-density wave, and Kekule phases. The research also uncovers special cases and the formation of new states at certain filling factors.

Excitonic nature of magnons in a quantum Hall ferromagnet

A. Assouline et al.

Summary: Magnons can transfer magnetic moment or spin over long distances. In quantum Hall ferromagnets, it is predicted that spin and charge are entangled, resulting in magnons carrying an electric dipole moment. Evidence of this electric dipole moment is found in a graphene quantum Hall ferromagnet using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, with the magnons affecting interferometer flux and interference pattern phase and visibility. The ability to couple spin degree of freedom to an electrostatic potential in quantum Hall ferromagnets could have implications for spintronics.

Scattering of Magnons at Graphene Quantum-Hall-Magnet Junctions

Nemin Wei et al.

Summary: Research shows that there are certain patterns in the scattering of magnons between states with different filling factors, with chiral scattering occurring when the junction lacks mirror symmetry; kinematic constraints can completely block magnon transmission, explaining the suppression of certain voltage signals observed; the combination of valley waves and magnons can be used to probe the spin or valley flavor structure of QHM states at integer and fractional filling factors.

Edge channels of broken-symmetry quantum Hall states in graphene visualized by atomic force microscopy

Sungmin Kim et al.

Summary: The quantum Hall effect in graphene exhibits unique properties, with broken-symmetry edge states that have been difficult to spatially measure. This article spatially maps these edge states using atomic force microscopy, showing a gapped ground state transitioning from the bulk through to the quantum Hall edge boundary.

Gapless Spin Wave Transport through a Quantum Canted Antiferromagnet

Hailong Fu et al.

Summary: In this work, a new experimental method was demonstrated to successfully detect gapless, linearly dispersed spin wave excitations in bilayer graphene, providing direct evidence for a predicted antiferromagnetic order. The spin wave mode propagates at a high velocity and maintains phase coherence over a significant distance, consistent with hydrodynamic theory. These findings lay the groundwork for exploring spin superfluidity and potentially engineering magnonic devices in high-quality materials.

Transport in helical Luttinger liquids in the fractional quantum Hall regime

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: Experimental observation in the fractional quantum Hall regime shows that the current carried by hDWs is significantly smaller than predicted by the naive model. Theoretical analysis using Luttinger liquid theory reveals a redistribution of currents between quasiparticle charge, spin, and neutral modes, leading to the reduction of the hDW current. Including spin-non-conserving tunneling processes reconciles theory with experiment and confirms the emergence of spin modes necessary for the formation of fractional topological superconductivity.

Skyrmion zoo in graphene at charge neutrality in a strong magnetic field

Jonathan Atteia et al.

Summary: Due to the approximate spin-valley symmetry in graphene, the ground state of electrons at charge neutrality forms a specific SU(4) quantum Hall ferromagnet. This choice between spin degree of freedom and valley pseudo-spin degree of freedom is limited by energy scales that break the SU(4) symmetry, such as the Zeeman effect. Different types of skyrmions compatible with these quantum Hall ferromagnets can be characterized by their energy minimization within a variational approach.
