Application of a robust microplate assay to determine induced β-1,3-glucanase and chitinase activity in the cotton plant

Muhammad Fahad Khan et al.

Summary: The resistance induced in cotton plants can be determined by evaluating the production of beta-1,3-glucanase and chitinase. The traditional assays for determining beta-1,3-glucanase and chitinase activity are time-consuming and expensive, but a modified microplate assay has proven to be more cost-effective and efficient. The sensitivity of the microplate assay was significantly increased compared to previous methods, providing a robust technique for assessing induced resistance in cotton plants.

The GH19 Engineering Database: Sequence diversity, substrate scope, and evolution in glycoside hydrolase family 19

Marco Orlando et al.

Summary: GH19 glycoside hydrolase is a bifunctional family of chitinases and endolysins that have applications in controlling plant fungal pests, recycling chitin biomass, and treating multi-drug resistant bacteria. Sequence analysis divided the GH19 domain-containing sequences into chitinase and endolysin subfamilies, with chitinase subfamily having seventeen groups and endolysin subfamily having thirty-four groups. Despite sequence diversity, conserved residues in chitinases and endolysins suggest a potential mechanism for substrate specificity beyond direct substrate interaction.

Genome-Wide Identification and Expression of Chitinase Class I Genes in Garlic (Allium sativum L.) Cultivars Resistant and Susceptible to Fusarium proliferatum

Mikhail A. Filyushin et al.

Summary: This study identified seven class I chitinase genes in garlic, which may play a role in defense against Fusarium fungi. The expression of these genes varied in different parts of garlic plants and in resistant versus susceptible cultivars, suggesting their involvement in the garlic response to Fusarium proliferatum attack.

Structural and Evolutionary Analyses of PR-4 SUGARWINs Points to a Different Pattern of Protein Function

Lorhenn Bryanda Lemes Maia et al.

Summary: SUGARWINs are PR-4 proteins associated with sugarcane defense against phytopathogens, particularly fungal pathogens. While SUGARWIN1 exhibits ribonuclease, chitosanase, and chitinase activities, SUGARWIN2 only displays chitosanase activity. Structural analysis reveals that SUGARWIN1's structure and presence of the catalytic histidine at position 42 make it competent as a ribonuclease.

A Genome-Wide Analysis of Pathogenesis-Related Protein-1 (PR-1) Genes from Piper nigrum Reveals Its Critical Role during Phytophthora capsici Infection

Divya Kattupalli et al.

Summary: The study identified PR-1 genes in black pepper that play a crucial role in defense against Phytophthora capsici, with variations in signal peptide motifs and amino acid composition. Most PnPR-1 proteins were found to be basic in nature, and their predicted structures suggest a functional role in black pepper. Genomic and transcriptomic analyses revealed the importance of PnPR-1 genes in the plant's defense response against P. capsici infection.
