Diagnosis and Treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections A Review

Susan Tuddenham et al.

Summary: Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the US had a sexually transmitted infection (STI) in 2018. Rates of gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis in the US have increased, while rates of HSV-1 and HSV-2 have declined. Effective treatments are available for most STIs, but antimicrobial resistance limits oral therapies for gonorrhea and Mycoplasma genitalium, and no cure is available for genital herpes.

Management of Adult Syphilis: Key Questions to Inform the 2021 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Sexually Transmitted Infections Treatment Guidelines

Susan Tuddenham et al.

Summary: This article investigates key questions in the management of adult syphilis and conducts a systematic literature review. The results suggest that there is no clinical benefit to using more than one dose of benzathine penicillin G for early syphilis in HIV-infected patients. Doxycycline is an acceptable alternative if penicillin cannot be used. Additionally, diagnostic cerebrospinal fluid examination is not necessary for certain cases, such as isolated ocular or otic signs and symptoms, reactive syphilis serologic results, and confirmed ocular/otic abnormalities.

Factors associated with measles resurgence in the United States in the post-elimination era

Christian Akem Dimala et al.

Summary: Despite a reduction in the percentage of imported measles cases over the past two decades, the incidence of measles in the US continues to increase. This is due to an increasing number of outbreaks in unvaccinated subpopulations, reinforced by vaccine hesitancy, leading to internal transmission.

Immune amnesia induced by measles and its effects on concurrent epidemics

Guillermo B. Morales et al.

Summary: Recent discovery suggests that the measles virus may cause immune amnesia, erasing pre-existing immunological memory and potentially altering the vaccination coverage needed for herd immunity. This could have significant implications for epidemic spreading and the development of immunization strategies in the face of rising anti-vaccination movements.
