Deciphering Temperature Seasonality in Earth's Ancient Oceans

Linda C. Ivany et al.

Summary: The study of paleoseasonal proxy data can provide insights into the impact of global warming on seasonal extremes and improve estimates of mean annual temperature. The analysis of seasonal data can reveal spatiotemporal climate patterns on the ancient Earth and their response to pCO(2).

Clumped isotopes in modern marine bivalves

Damien Huyghe et al.

Summary: Clumped-isotope thermometry is an alternative approach for temperature reconstructions of carbonates, utilizing Delta(47) measurements without the need for independent information on the oxygen isotope composition of parent waters. New calibration observations on marine bivalves from various ecosystems reaffirm the efficacy and accuracy of this method for paleoclimatic temperature reconstructions.

Growth rate, extinction and survival amongst late Cenozoic bivalves of the North Atlantic

Summary: The extinction or survival of bivalve taxa in the late Cenozoic, particularly in groups with a low growth rate, was not influenced by whether they were relatively fast or slow growers, but rather directly impacted by environmental change.

Late Holocene seasonal temperature variability of the western Scottish shelf (St Kilda) recorded in fossil shells of the bivalve Glycymeris glycymeris

Stella J. Alexandroff et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of the North Atlantic Ocean and adjacent shelf seas in global climate and the need for a network of highly resolved marine archives. Sclerochronology of bivalves has provided records of past climate variability. Analysis of Glycymeris glycymeris shells revealed similarities in growth season and temperature range between modern and fossil specimens, attributed to similar boundary conditions in the fourth millennium BP compared to today.

Growth-increment characteristics and isotopic (δ18O) temperature record of sub-thermocline Aequipecten opercularis (Mollusca:Bivalvia): evidence from modern Adriatic forms and an application to early Pliocene examples from eastern England

Andrew L. A. Johnson et al.

Summary: The shell delta O-18 of young modern Aequipecten opercularis provides a faithful record of seasonal variation in sea temperature in the southern North Sea. While individuals in less agitated warm climates may not record the full seasonal range, those in sub-thermocline settings show high-amplitude variation in increment size. This suggests that A. opercularis shells are a good isotopic record of ambient temperature and their hydrographic setting can be determined from increment data.

Seasonal origin of the thermal maxima at the Holocene and the last interglacial

Samantha Bova et al.

Summary: Proxy reconstructions show that peak temperatures in the Holocene and the last interglacial period may have exceeded modern warmth, contradicting monotonic warming simulated by climate models. The discrepancy between model results and reconstructions undermines confidence in both, but indicates different climate dynamics between the two periods due to changes in greenhouse gas levels and ice sheet extent. The study suggests that the early Holocene was cooled by larger remnant glacial ice sheets, while rising greenhouse gas levels in the late Holocene warmed the planet. Modern global temperatures may have surpassed those of the past 12,000 years and could approach the warmth of the last interglacial period.

Temperature-induced microstructural changes in shells of laboratory-grown Arctica islandica (Bivalvia)

Nils Hoeche et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of temperature on the microstructural properties of the crossed-acicular microstructure in Arctica islandica shells. Results show that with increasing temperature, the size of the largest biomineral units and the proportion of crystalline phase in the shell increase, along with the size of the largest pores. The study introduces a new microstructural temperature proxy and suggests a temperature control mechanism on the micrometer-scale architecture of bivalve shells across species.

Internal Water Facilitates Thermal Resetting of Clumped Isotopes in Biogenic Aragonite

C. W. Nooitgedacht et al.

Summary: The study reveals that biogenic aragonite undergoes significant oxygen isotope exchange with internal water during heating, affecting the reconstruction of paleotemperatures. In contrast, inorganic aragonite does not exhibit oxygen isotope exchange, suggesting a link between internal oxygen isotope exchange and Δ(47) resetting. Water-aragonite exchange occurs at lower temperatures and may have occurred earlier during the burial of biogenic aragonites.

The Yorktown Formation: Improved Stratigraphy, Chronology, and Paleoclimate Interpretations from the U.S. Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain

Harry J. Dowsett et al.

Summary: The study investigates the Yorktown Formation in southeastern Virginia to understand the paleoclimate conditions during the mid-Piacenzian Warm Period. By analyzing sea surface temperature and planktonic foraminiferal assemblage data, the research provides important insights into the temperature patterns, seasonality, and ocean circulation in the western North Atlantic during this period, and offers a chronologic framework for future studies on ecological responses to climate change.

Optimizing sampling strategies in high-resolution paleoclimate records

Niels J. de Winter et al.

Summary: Paleoclimate studies aimed at resolving climate variability face a statistical challenge in extracting meaningful information from noisy proxy records. Different methods for combining proxy data, such as smoothing, binning, and sample size optimization, were tested in this study to improve accuracy in reconstructing seasonal variability. Strategic combinations of clumped isotope analyses were found to significantly enhance accuracy in seasonality reconstructions, particularly in settings with poorly constrained water isotopic composition.

Summary: In the PlioMIP2 project, climate models were used to simulate the interglacial climate during the mid-Piacenzian warm period. The models showed a discrepancy in simulating the AMOC, poleward ocean heat transport, and sea surface warming in the North Atlantic, with most models underestimating the warming compared to reconstructions.
