Characterization of Protonated Substituted Ureas by Using Diagnostic Gas-Phase Ion-Molecule Reactions Followed by Collision-Activated Dissociation in Tandem Mass Spectrometry Experiments

Erlu Feng et al.

Summary: Substituted ureas are a class of organic compounds commonly used in agriculture and chemical fields, and distinguishing them from other compounds with similar structures can be challenging. A four-stage tandem mass spectrometry method (MS4) was introduced in this study to differentiate between different ureas and similar compounds. The method utilizes gas-phase ion-molecule reactions followed by collision-activated dissociation (CAD) steps to generate diagnostic fragment ions that can effectively distinguish ureas, amides, and carbamates.
