Interplay of spin magnetism, orbital magnetism, and atomic structure in layered van der Waals ferromagnet VI3

L. M. Sandratskii et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of ferromagnetism in the layered van der Waals material VI3 has attracted significant research interest, but issues remain unresolved concerning deviations in the easy axis, inequivalence of V atoms, and V magnetic moments. Utilizing symmetry arguments with DFT and DFT-PU calculations, it has been shown that the distorted crystal structure of VI3 leads to deviations in the easy axis and inequivalence of V atoms. The calculations also reveal a significant intra-atomic noncollinearity of V spin and orbital moments, indicating strong competition between various effects influencing the magnetic properties.

Electronic structure and magnetism in UGa2: DFT+DMFT approach

Banhi Chatterjee et al.

Summary: The debate over whether uranium 5f electrons in the ferromagnetic compound UGa2 are closer to being localized or itinerant remains unresolved. Experimental magnetic moment measurements suggest localized behavior, but various spectroscopic observations also show signs of itinerant characteristics. Dynamic mean-field theory (DMFT) with material-specific modifications can accurately describe the magnetic moments in UGa2, highlighting the importance of electron-electron correlations in understanding the electronic structure of the compound.

UTe2: A nearly insulating half-filled j=5/2 5f3 heavy-fermion metal

Alexander B. Shick et al.

Summary: Correlated band theory based on density functional theory with exact diagonalization was applied to UTe2, revealing its physical properties at different U values, including a transition to a semimetallic state at U = 3 eV. Predictions were made for the Kondo temperature of UTe2 and the electric field gradient difference between uranium and tellurium sites, consistent with experimental observations.

Magnetic and electronic phases of U2Rh3Si5

J. Willwater et al.

Summary: A detailed study of the magnetic and electronic properties of U2Rh3Si5, including the establishment of magnetic phase diagrams for all crystallographic directions, has been conducted. The possibility of an electronic phase above the Neel temperature as a precursor of a magnetic phase has also been discussed.

Insight into the physics of the 5f-band antiferromagnet U2Ni2Sn from the pressure dependence of crystal structure and electrical resistivity

Silvie Maskova-Cerna et al.

Summary: The resistivity study of U2Ni2Sn single crystal under both ambient and high pressure conditions revealed Fermi-liquid behavior and spin excitations, with a nonmonotonic change in the Neel temperature as pressure increases. High-pressure x-ray diffraction shows an orthorhombic distortion occurring around the maximum of the Neel temperature. Computational analysis suggests that the loss of magnetism in U2Ni2Sn under pressure is mainly caused by 5f-band broadening due to the collapse of U-U dimers.
