Quantifying arsenic post-depositional mobility in lake sediments impacted by gold ore roasting in sub-arctic Canada using inverse diagenetic modelling

Emilie Leclerc et al.

Summary: Lake sediments are used as environmental archives to reconstruct past changes in contaminants deposition, however, the mobility of arsenic in sediments during early diagenesis may affect the reliability of As depth profiles. Results from the study suggest that lakes further than 50 km from mines act as sinks for arsenic, while lakes closer to the mines sustain present-day arsenic fluxes. The study also indicates that peaks in solid phase arsenic coincide with periods of high emissions from gold ore roasting activities.

Summary: This study aims to develop a numerical predictive model for REE speciation in various environments to help predict their behavior and potential toxic effects. The predictive capabilities of Model VII were demonstrated by successfully modeling the effects of different cations and carbonates on REE-HA binding, suggesting its applicability to a wide range of physico-chemical conditions.

Influence of natural organic matter and pH on phosphate removal by and filterable lanthanum release from lanthanum-modified bentonite

Summary: The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) interferes with the phosphate (PO4)-binding capability of lanthanum modified bentonite (LMB), leading to decreased phosphorus (P) removal efficiency. The impact of NOM is more pronounced at pH 8.5.
