Finite-temperature phases of trapped bosons in a two-dimensional quasiperiodic potential

Matteo Ciardi et al.

Summary: In this paper, we study the finite-temperature properties of a 2D trapped boson system in a quasiperiodic potential using ab initio path integral Monte Carlo simulations. We find the existence of a robust Bose glass phase, which is not affected by thermal fluctuations up to about half of the critical temperature of the noninteracting system. We characterize local quantities in the trap using zonal estimators and present a phase diagram for a set of parameters relevant to current experiments with quasi-2D optical confinement.

New states of matter with fine-tuned interactions: quantum droplets and dipolar supersolids

Fabian Boettcher et al.

Summary: This paper discusses how quantum fluctuations can stabilize Bose-Einstein condensates and lead to the emergence of new states of matter such as liquid-like self-bound quantum droplets and supersolid crystals. The properties of these exotic states and the experimental progress in dipolar quantum gases and Bose-Bose mixtures are reviewed. Important open questions for future research are also outlined.

Nonconventional Phases of Colloidal Nanorods with a Soft Corona

Gerardo Campos-Villalobos et al.

Summary: By using computer simulations, this study investigates the phase behavior of hard-core spherocylinders coated by a soft deformable corona. The competition between different length scales results in the stabilization of unconventional in-plane lattices, including hexagonal, square, high-density hexagonal crystals, and a dodecagonal quasicrystal. This research opens up new opportunities for controlling the assembly of anisotropic nanoparticles to achieve structures with preengineered symmetry-dependent physical properties.

Two-dimensional supersolidity in a dipolar quantum gas

Matthew A. Norcia et al.

Summary: Supersolid states combine properties of solids and superfluids, initially envisioned in solid helium but observed in ultracold atomic gases. The extension of supersolid properties into two dimensions using dysprosium atoms opens up the possibility of studying rich excitation properties.

Ground-state phase diagram of ultrasoft bosons

Alejandro Mendoza-Coto et al.

Summary: In two-dimensional bosonic systems with ultrasoft interactions, supersolid phases can appear in free space conditions. Through a variational mean-field calculation with cluster-forming interactions, detailed ground-state phase diagrams were obtained, showing coexistence regimes of crystals with different occupancy and superfluid phases. The study suggests that the solid-superfluid coexistence could be a reliable marker to locate supersolidity.

Self-bound droplet clusters in laser-driven Bose-Einstein condensates

Yong-Chang Zhang et al.

Summary: By controlling the sign of the underlying interaction potential through additional optical elements and external fields, the system behavior becomes enriched, resulting in a diverse range of ground states of the condensate. Importantly, these ordered states are entirely self-bound and stable without any external in-plane confinement.

Cluster self-assembly condition for arbitrary interaction potentials

Alejandro Mendoza-Coto et al.

Summary: The study presents a criterion for determining the emergence of cluster phases in a collection of classical particles with repulsive two-body interactions. By analyzing at zero temperature in the low density region, the relevant characteristics of the interaction potential that lead to the energy of a two-particle cluster-crystal becoming smaller than a simple triangular lattice are identified. The method is applied to various examples of potentials with and without cluster-forming ability, and the emergence of self-assembled cluster crystals is well captured by the presented analytic criterion.
