Relationship between the Electronic Polarization and the Winding Number in Non-Hermitian Systems

Shohei Masuda et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the extension of Resta's electronic polarization to non-Hermitian systems. The electronic polarization is introduced as an expectation value of the position operator in terms of the biorthogonal basis. It is found that there is a finite region with zero polarization between two topologically distinguished regions, and the polarization is in one-to-one correspondence with the winding number. This argument is demonstrated in the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model.

Nielsen-Ninomiya Theorem with Bulk Topology: Duality in Floquet and Non-Hermitian Systems

Takumi Bessho et al.

Summary: The Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem, originally focused on realizing chiral fermions in static lattice systems, has been extended to dynamical systems where bulk chiral fermions are permitted due to intrinsic bulk topology. The theorem, based on duality, provides a unified treatment for periodically driven systems and non-Hermitian ones. Additionally, an application of the extended theorem and duality predicts a new type of chiral magnetic effect - the non-Hermitian chiral magnetic skin effect.

Exceptional topology of non-Hermitian systems

Emil J. Bergholtz et al.

Summary: This review discusses the current understanding of the role of topology in non-Hermitian systems and its physical consequences in dissipative settings, focusing on the concept of exceptional degeneracies and its distinct phenomena, as well as the new notions of gapped phases in single-band systems. The unique sensitivity of non-Hermitian matrices to boundary conditions is highlighted, leading to anomalous relationships between bulk and boundary physics. Additionally, applications of non-Hermitian topology in classical and quantum systems are reviewed, showing its relevance beyond the field of topological phases.

Non-reciprocal phase transitions

Michel Fruchart et al.

Summary: The article discusses the impact of non-reciprocity on the collective behavior of multi-body systems in out-of-equilibrium states, indicating that non-reciprocity leads to the emergence of time-dependent phases controlled by exceptional points. The article describes the non-reciprocal generalizations of three archetypal classes of self-organization out of equilibrium, including synchronization, flocking, and pattern formation.

Symmetry Classes of Open Fermionic Quantum Matter

Alexander Altland et al.

Summary: This study presents a complete symmetry classification of fermion matter in and out of thermal equilibrium, starting from the state transformations in fermionic Fock spaces and the invariance properties of the density matrix dynamical equation. The classification of generators of reversible dynamics, dissipation, and fluctuations in irreversible and interacting dynamical equations leads to a distinction between equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium symmetries, highlighting the role of time in each case. In the context of nonequilibrium quantum dynamics, a novel realization of antilinear symmetries is observed, fundamentally different from the rules of thermal equilibrium.

Entanglement entropy of non-Hermitian free fermions

Yi-Bin Guo et al.

Summary: The study investigates the entanglement properties of non-Hermitian free fermionic models with translation symmetry using the correlation matrix technique, revealing a logarithmic correction to the area law in both one-dimensional and two-dimensional systems. In particular, for one-dimensional one-band systems, each Fermi point contributes exactly 1/2 to the coefficient c of the logarithmic correction. Numerical calculations and finite-size scaling analysis confirm this relation between c and Fermi point in more general one-dimensional and two-dimensional cases. Additionally, the study also explores single-particle and density-density correlation functions.

Bulk-Boundary Correspondence for Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians via Green Functions

Heinrich-Gregor Zirnstein et al.

Summary: This study investigates the realization of genuinely non-Hermitian topological phases in open systems with strong gain and loss, and reveals that the non-Hermitian winding number in one dimension indicates a topological phase transition in the bulk, implying spatial growth of the bulk Green function.

Real-space dynamical mean field theory study of non-Hermitian skin effect for correlated systems: Analysis based on pseudospectrum

Tsuneya Yoshida

Summary: In this study, a correlated system in equilibrium with non-Hermitian topology inducing a skin effect was analyzed. The pseudospectrum under different boundary conditions and the impact of line-gap topology were discussed. Numerical simulations revealed that damping of quasiparticles destroys nontrivial line-gap topology while inducing nontrivial point-gap topology, which are reflected in the temperature dependence of local pseudospectral weight.

Topological aspects of periodically driven non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

Vivek M. Vyas et al.

Summary: The study investigates the topological features of a non-Hermitian generalization of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model driven by a periodic external potential, finding that the bi-orthonormal geometric phase acts as a topological index capturing the presence/absence of zero modes. The model exhibits trivial and nontrivial insulator phases as well as a topologically nontrivial Mobius metallic phase. Additionally, the driving field amplitude is shown to be a control parameter causing topological phase transitions.
