A conductive photothermal non-swelling nanocomposite hydrogel patch accelerating bone defect repair

Yongwei Li et al.

Summary: Bone defect repair is a common issue in clinic, and the development of multifunctional scaffolds has shown promise in promoting bone regeneration. In this study, multifunctional hydrogels were developed using gelatin methacrylate (GM), acryloyl-beta-cyclodextrin (Ac-CD), and beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD)-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (rGO). These hydrogels exhibited stable mechanical properties, non-swelling property, conductivity, and photothermal antibacterial properties. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that the hydrogels had good biocompatibility and promoted cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation, leading to accelerated bone defect repair in a rat model. Two-photon laser scanning microscopy (TPLSM) was also used to directly evaluate bone defect repair. Overall, these multifunctional hydrogels have great potential for clinical application in bone tissue formation and defect repair.

Electronic Bone Growth Stimulators for Augmentation of Osteogenesis in In Vitro and In Vivo Models: A Narrative Review of Electrical Stimulation Mechanisms and Device Specifications

Peter J. Nicksic et al.

Summary: Since the discovery of the piezoelectric quality of bone in 1957, scientists have been exploring the use of external electrical stimulation for bone healing. However, electronic bone growth stimulators are not commonly used in clinical settings due to their high cost and lack of faith in their efficacy among clinicians. This narrative review examines preclinical research on electrical stimulation and its effects on bone properties, highlighting the gaps in clinical translation and emphasizing the importance of device specifications and mechanisms of action.
