Effect of Flowering Time-Related Genes on Biomass, Harvest Index, and Grain Yield in CIMMYT Elite Spring Bread Wheat

Susanne Dreisigacker et al.

Summary: Allelic variants of vernalization (Vrn), photoperiod (Ppd), and earliness per se (Eps) genes in elite spring wheat genotypes were found to have significant effects on the phenological stages, biomass, harvest index, and grain yield. Favorable alleles at TaTOE-B1 and TaFT3-B1 were associated with higher grain yield and harvest index, but their effects on sink and source traits differed, with TaTOE-B1 affecting traits related to grain number and TaFT3-B1 affecting traits related to grain weight. This study expands the toolbox for wheat breeders in developing better-adapted and higher-yielding wheat cultivars.

Overcoming the trade-off between grain weight and number in wheat by the ectopic expression of expansin in developing seeds leads to increased yield potential

Daniel F. Calderini et al.

Summary: By targeted overexpression of an alpha-expansin in early developing wheat seeds, grain size can be significantly increased without a negative effect on grain number, resulting in a yield boost under field conditions.

The look ahead trace back optimizer for genomic selection under transparent and opaque simulators

Fatemeh Amini et al.

Summary: Recent advances in genomic selection emphasize the importance of both accuracy of genomic prediction and intelligence in selection strategies. A new variant of the look ahead approach, the look ahead trace back algorithm, is introduced along with the development of opaque simulators to evaluate GS algorithm performance more realistically. Comprehensive computational experiments using maize data reveal the interaction between GS algorithms and different simulators, highlighting the need for continued research in designing more realistic simulators.

Gene-based mapping of trehalose biosynthetic pathway genes reveals association with source- and sink-related yield traits in a spring wheat panel

Danilo H. Lyra et al.

Summary: This study revealed the significant impact of trehalose phosphate synthase (TPS) and trehalose phosphate phosphatase (TPP) genes on genetic variation related to yield traits in wheat, with TPS1 homologues playing a particularly important role, and identified epistatic interactions within and between TPS and TPP gene families.

Matthew Reynolds et al.

Summary: The asymmetry of investment in crop research has resulted in knowledge gaps, but by focusing on relatively underrepresented research areas with the potential to boost productivity and leveraging previous knowledge, it is possible to improve crop breeding and management decisions, making it easier to explore crop genetic resources and enhance breeding strategies.

Increased ranking change in wheat breeding under climate change

Wei Xiong et al.

Summary: The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center annually distributes elite wheat lines to breeders worldwide and conducts trials to assess their performance and improve breeding strategies. Climate change is impacting how wheat genotypes are bred and selected, with significant changes in genotype-environment interactions observed over recent decades. Climatic factors explain a substantial portion of the year-to-year variability in the performance interactions of wheat genotypes.
