Vapor compression refrigeration testing on parabolic flights: Part 1-cycle stability

Leon P. M. Brendel et al.

Summary: This research experimentally investigated the effects of hyper and microgravity on a vapor compression cycle during parabolic flights. The results showed that the cycle operation was mildly affected by the varying g-forces, and most measurements and performance indicators remained within normal range. A loss of superheat was observed in one set of parabolas due to gravity changes, but other sets maintained normal operation of superheat and subcooling.

Vapor compression refrigeration testing on parabolic flights: Part 2-heat exchanger performance

Leon P. M. Brendel et al.

Summary: This paper presents experimental results on a vapor compression cycle in microgravity scenario. The study shows that gravity has an impact on the condenser and evaporator, leading to changes in flow patterns and an increase in discharge pressure. Oscillations were also observed in the evaporator under certain conditions. The cycle's response to varying gravity can be classified into four groups based on cooling capacity.

Effect of orientation on the steady-state performance of vapor compression cycles

Stephen L. Caskey et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of orientation changes on vapor compression cycles using two refrigerants. Significant mass flow rate oscillations were observed, particularly at lower flow rates. The experimental results showed sinusoidal behaviors with varying amplitudes when plotted against the inclination angle.

Comparison of Gravity Independence Criteria for Two-Phase Flow

Leon P. M. Brendel et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the research on the effect of gravity on two-phase flow phenomena, proposes methods for two-phase flow independent of gravity force, providing a new approach for designing two-phase flow systems under microgravity conditions, and emphasizes the importance of validating two-phase flow criteria for future research.
