Keeping predators out: testing fences to reduce livestock depredation at night-time corrals

Gustaf Samelius et al.

Summary: Livestock depredation by large carnivores poses a global conservation challenge, and tall fences have been shown to be highly effective in reducing losses to snow leopards and wolves in nighttime corrals. The study found that the reduction in livestock losses at fenced corrals was due to the presence of the fences, rather than temporal variation in predation pressure. Herder attitudes towards snow leopards remained positive, while attitudes towards wolves worsened during the study.

Determinants of herder attitudes towards the Vulnerable snow leopard Panthera uncia in Yushu Prefecture, China

Charlotte E. Hacker et al.

Summary: Local community support is essential for effective snow leopard conservation in Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai Province. Despite experiencing livestock loss to snow leopards, the majority of herders maintain positive attitudes towards the species. Herders with higher education levels and fewer livestock losses are more likely to hold positive attitudes, while those with lower importance of snow leopards in their religion, more livestock losses, and lower education levels are more likely to hold negative attitudes.

A global view on evidence-based effectiveness of interventions used to protect livestock from wild cats

Igor Khorozyan et al.

Summary: The study analyzed 92 cases from 57 publications on the effectiveness of livestock protection interventions for wild felids, finding significant differences in effectiveness between species. Cheetahs, Iberian lynx, and snow leopards showed very effective reduction in damage due to species shyness, good fit of interventions, and strong social involvement, while some other species like leopards, pumas, and caracals showed variable and often low effectiveness. Further research is needed to understand intervention effectiveness in little studied species and regions.
