Visualization of bone details in a novel photon-counting dual-source CT scanner-comparison with energy-integrating CT

Stefanie J. Bette et al.

Summary: In this study comparing PCD-CT and EID-CT in mouse specimens, PCD-CT demonstrated lower image noise, higher SNR, and better edge sharpness compared to EID-CT. Radiologists consistently preferred PCD-CT for visualizing bone details, even in SNR-matched pairs.

High-Pitch Photon-Counting Detector Computed Tomography Angiography of the Aorta Intraindividual Comparison to Energy-Integrating Detector Computed Tomography at Equal Radiation Dose

Andre Euler et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the objective and subjective image quality of high-pitch PCD-CT and conventional EID-CT of the aorta at the same radiation dose. The results showed that high-pitch PCD-CT with VMI at 40 and 45 keV had significantly higher CNR compared to EID-CT with ATVS at matched radiation dose. The CNR gain of PCD-CT was more pronounced in overweight patients. A trade-off between objective and subjective image quality was found with VMI at 45 to 50 keV.

Photon Counting CT: Clinical Applications and Future Developments

Scott S. Hsieh et al.

Summary: This review article discusses the potential clinical applications of photon counting detectors in CT, highlighting their advantages over conventional detectors and their potential applications in reducing metal artifacts, beam hardening artifacts, noise streaks, better characterization of incidental findings, and visualization of high-resolution structures such as the temporal bone. Anticipated improvements in PCD CT are also discussed, including new contrast agents and their impact on performance in these applications.

Potential of ultra-high-resolution photon-counting CT of bone metastases: initial experiences in breast cancer patients

E. Wehrse et al.

Summary: The study explored the potential of higher spatial resolution for imaging of bone metastases using Photon-counting detector (PCD) computed tomography (CT) technology. The experimental PCD CT scanning demonstrated improved visualization of lesion margins and content in breast cancer patients with bone metastases, suggesting a high potential for therapy monitoring in breast cancer. Further studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

Pelvic bone CT: can tin-filtered ultra-low-dose CT and virtual radiographs be used as alternative for standard CT and digital radiographs?

Christoph Stern et al.

Summary: Ultra-low-dose CT with tin filtration for the osseous pelvis showed a significant dose reduction of 84% compared to standard CT, while maintaining similar imaging quality for assessing bone anatomy and pathologies. Additionally, ULD-CT demonstrated a markedly superior dose efficiency compared to standard CT.

Jiri Ferda et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the feasibility and effectiveness of using PC-CT system in body imaging of clinical patients. It shows that PC-CT provides lower radiation dose in ultra-high resolution mode, better imaging quality compared to energy integrating CT, and higher signal-to-noise ratio in both lung and abdominal imaging.
