Goals and Gaps: Educational Careers of Immigrant Children

Michela Carlana et al.

Summary: This study examines the educational choices of children of immigrants in Italy and finds that immigrants are more likely to enroll in vocational high schools, especially male students. A randomized intervention providing tutoring and career counseling has positive effects on the educational choices and grade retention of male immigrant students, but no significant effects on female immigrant students or native students. Changes in teachers' recommendations and academic motivation explain a significant portion of the effects.

CONCESSIONS, VIOLENCE, AND INDIRECT RULE: EVIDENCE FROM THE CONGO FREE STATE

Sara Lowes et al.

Summary: During the colonial era, colonial powers granted concessions to private companies to extract natural resources, particularly in Africa. These concessions were characterized by indirect rule and violence. Research shows that areas historically exposed to such concessions experienced worse education, wealth, and health outcomes, with differences in public goods provision, leadership selection, and cultural attitudes observed near former concession boundaries.

The Origins of Violence in Rwanda

Leander Heldring

Summary: This article explores the link between the intensity of violence in Rwanda and the establishment of its pre-colonial state. Villages under centralized rule experienced more violence during the 1994 genocide, while violence decreased when the government pursued peace. The cultural norms of obedience play a significant role in sustaining the effects of the historical state on violence.

The Legacy of Colonial Medicine in Central Africa

Sara Lowes et al.

Summary: Between 1921 and 1956, French colonial governments organized medical campaigns to treat and prevent sleeping sickness in Central Africa, resulting in decreased vaccination rates and trust in medicine among villagers. Current health initiatives, particularly World Bank projects in the health sector, may be less successful in areas with a history of high campaign exposure.

Summary: The study found that by October 2020, countries with high cultural looseness were estimated to have higher numbers of COVID-19 cases and deaths compared to countries with high cultural tightness.
