Assisted species migration and hybridization to conserve cold-adapted plants under climate change

Kimberly M. Charles et al.

Summary: Climate change is putting arctic and alpine plants at risk of extinction due to temperature rise. Assisted species migration and hybridization are considered as methods to conserve cold-adapted species and genes, and to minimize negative effects on ecosystem functioning. These approaches could help save key cold-adapted species at risk of extinction with minimal disruption to ecosystems.

High levels of genetic diversity and an absence of genetic structure among breeding populations of the endangered Rufous-backed Bunting in Inner Mongolia, China: implications for conservation

Shi Li et al.

Summary: The Rufous-backed Bunting in Inner Mongolia exhibits high genetic diversity but shows high levels of gene flow and minimal genetic structuring among fragmented breeding populations. Despite the overall genetic diversity, local populations remain at risk of extinction due to habitat loss, with a high risk of inbreeding within the population. Conservation efforts in Inner Mongolia should focus on protecting breeding habitats and preventing over-grazing to preserve the genetic diversity of this endangered species.

Asymmetric allelic introgression across a hybrid zone of the coal tit (Periparus ater) in the central Himalayas*

Hannes Wolfgramm et al.

Summary: A population genetic analysis was conducted for the coal tit hybrid zone in Nepal, revealing genetic admixture of western and eastern mitochondrial lineages restricted to a narrow zone of phenotypically intermediate populations. Allelic introgression of microsatellite loci was asymmetrical from eastern into far western populations, leading to a wider microsatellite cline than the mitochondrial one.

Hybridization with mountain hares increases the functional allelic repertoire in brown hares

Jaakko L. O. Pohjoismaki et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the ancestral genetic diversity of Finnish brown hares is small, while gene flow from mountain hares provides an important source of functional genetic variability. Some genetic variations may offer adaptive advantage for brown hares, while immunity-related genes are reciprocally exchanged and maintained through balancing selection.

Biogeography and diversification of Old World buntings (Aves: Emberizidae): radiation in open habitats

Tianlong Cai et al.

Summary: Through analyzing the phylogeny and diversification patterns of Emberizidae, it was found that their most recent common ancestor originated in the New World and later invaded the eastern Palearctic through the Bering Straits Bridge, splitting into two lineages in Africa and the Palearctic. The group began to diversify in the late Miocene, rapidly at first due to the expansion of open habitats, but the diversification rate decreased in arid habitats as available habitats were occupied. Shifts in habitat preference to open forests led to terminal radiations in the mountains of Central Asia and the eastern Palearctic.
