A canonical Hamiltonian for open quantum systems

Patrick Hayden et al.

Summary: This article investigates the dynamics of open quantum systems and resolves the non-uniqueness issue of dividing the dynamics into unitary and dissipative parts. For finite-dimensional systems, a norm is specified to uniquely determine the canonical Hamiltonian, which is shown to be equivalent to the Hamiltonian initially defined by Lindblad.

Entropy-based formulation of thermodynamics in arbitrary quantum evolution

S. Alipour et al.

Summary: This study presents a method to separate the internal energy change of an open quantum system into entropy-related and entropy-free contributions, identified as heat and work. It demonstrates that heat and work have geometric and dynamical descriptions and introduces a universal dynamical equation for the system's trajectory. The study also defines an expression for irreversible entropy production, independent of internal energy change and environmental properties, based on the system's observables excluding its Hamiltonian.

Irreversible entropy production: From classical to quantum

Gabriel T. Landi et al.

Summary: Entropy production is a crucial quantity in finite-time thermodynamic processes, serving as a tool to extend thermodynamic considerations to nonequilibrium processes. Despite the lack of a unified theory for entropy production in general processes, progress has been made through frameworks like stochastic thermodynamics and quantum information theory. This has led to the development of a new generation of experiments addressing stochastic thermodynamic processes and the impact of entropy production.

Clausius inequality for finite baths reveals universal efficiency improvements

Philipp Strasberg et al.

Summary: Researchers studied entropy production in nanoscale devices coupled to finite heat baths, pointing out that Clausius' formulation of the second law for finite heat baths can be rigorously derived from a microscopic quantum description. The Clausius inequality indicates that nonequilibrium processes are less irreversible than previously thought, and extends Landauer's principle to finite baths, showing that heat engines in contact with finite baths may have a higher efficiency than previously believed. Importantly, these results are easy to study and only require knowledge of the average bath energy.
