Insight in the behavior of bipolar membrane equipped carbon dioxide electrolyzers at low electrolyte flowrates

Bert De Mot et al.

Summary: Electrochemical CO2 reduction is a promising technique for carbon capture and utilization to combat global warming. Extensive research has focused on catalyst improvement, reactor engineering, and electrode development, but a lack of understanding in fundamental electrolyzer behavior remains. By investigating the impact of product selectivity and current density on catholyte pH in bipolar membrane electrolyzers, researchers were able to operate the system under acidic conditions, producing formic acid instead of formate, a significant achievement in this field. This study helps bridge the gap in fundamental understanding and contributes to the development of more scalable systems for CO2 reduction.

Understanding morphological degradation of Ag nanoparticle during electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction by identical location observation

Hyewon Yun et al.

Summary: In this study, the relationship between the long-term stability and morphological changes of nanoparticle catalysts in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) was demonstrated using IL-TEM measurements. The results showed that as the duration of CO2RR increased, the hydrogen production activity of Ag particles decreased, while the morphology of the particles changed significantly.

Investigation of Electrolyte-Dependent Carbonate Formation on Gas Diffusion Electrodes for CO2 Electrolysis

Emiliana R. Cofell et al.

Summary: This study investigates the degradation of gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) in a flowing, alkaline CO2 electrolyzer via the formation of carbonate deposits on the GDE surface. The rate of carbonate deposit formation was found to increase with increasing electrolyte molarity and become more prevalent in K+-containing electrolytes. The formation of carbonate deposits was found to diminish electrode performance in ECO2R and reduce GDE hydrophobicity, leading to increased flooding and internal deposits within the GDE substrate.

Operando cathode activation with alkali metal cations for high current density operation of water-fed zero-gap carbon dioxide electrolysers

B. Endrodi et al.

Summary: Precipitates that form in the cathode of continuous-flow CO2 electrolysers hinder their long-term operation, but the alkali metals they are formed from actually boost activity. Researchers address this dichotomy by periodically infusing the cathode with alkaline cations, enabling the electrolyser to operate stably and efficiently for extended periods.

Enhanced CO2 electroreduction with metal-nitrogen-doped carbons in a continuous flow reactor

Miguel Duarte et al.

Summary: The study reports the superior performance of metal-nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts in electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide and/or formate at high current densities, with potential industrial applications. Tuning the transition metal composition allows for selectivity control, with promising activities observed for Ni-N-C and Sn-N-C catalysts in terms of both stability and productivity.
