Superoxide radical mediated Mn(III) formation is the key process in the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by Mn-incorporated bacterial-derived biochar

Bixia Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, a modified biochar containing MnO was synthesized and its activation capacity and mechanism for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) were investigated. The results showed that Mn-BBC exhibited significantly higher pollutant removal rate compared to traditional biochar, and it also showed anti-interference capacity and good stability. The study revealed that superoxide played an important role in the self-decomposition of PMS, promoting the activation of Mn-BBC.

Marine microbial Mn(II) oxidation mediates Cr(III) oxidation and isotope fractionation

Marzia Miletto et al.

Summary: Stable chromium isotopes have been used as a paleoredox proxy to track atmospheric oxygenation, with previous belief that Cr oxidation is limited to terrestrial settings. However, recent research shows rapid marine Cr(III) oxidation linked to microbial Mn(II) oxidation, challenging the traditional view. Initial partial oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) can cause a small isotope fractionation, calling for a reevaluation of the link between Cr isotope values and atmospheric oxygenation.

Carbamazepine removal by the synergistic effect of manganese-oxidizing microalgae and biogenic manganese oxides

Quanfeng Wang et al.

Summary: The study identified 40 strains of Mn-oxidizing microalgae with different mechanisms for Mn2+ oxidation. The combination of MnOMs and Bio-MnOx significantly increased the efficiency of carbamazepine removal, mainly through two synergistic mechanisms. The findings suggest that MnOMs and their generated Bio-MnOx have great potential for removing pharmaceutical contaminants from wastewater.

Enhanced performance of sulfamethoxazole degradation using Achromobacter sp. JL9 with in-situ generated biogenic manganese oxides

Dong Hui Liang et al.

Summary: Microbial activity plays a decisive role in the removal of sulfamethoxazole and nitrogen-N, while the catalytic character of sediment enhances the degradation of sulfamethoxazole. A possible degradation pathway was proposed based on the intermediate products, and the environmental toxicity of each intermediate was calculated using the ECOSAR program.
